    Original thread : http://productforums.google.com/for...asters/crawling-indexing--ranking/36SiohQK3oc

Here below what this poor webmaster written

I've read the FAQs and searched the help center.
    My URL is: http://mysite.com

Be aware of a new BlackHat Negative SEO technique. So just found out yesterday that one of our competitors is mass emailing a bunch of site owners who are linking to us pretending to be us and saying to take down our links or we will pursue legal actions. This competitor is targeting all our backlinks to get removed and site owners are actually taking them down and its affecting our rankings. This would really suck if this competitor gets away with this. One site owner sent us a copy of the email that is being sent which is here:

    "Dear Webmaster:

I write to notify you of unauthorized linking on your website. Camchatty.com is the owner of the exclusive rights protected under copyright law and other intellectual property rights. The following links are specific examples of URLs that link to http://mysite.com/ without authorization: http://www.your_site_that_is_linking_to_us.com

Camchatty.com hereby notifies you that the following constitute or incorporate links to http://mysite.com/ which were placed without prior permission and are therefore unauthorized.

Camchatty.com requests that you act expeditiously to remove or disable access to all unauthorized links to http://mysite.com/ on your website. We also ask that you provide us with written assurance of this fact within 3 business days from the date of this letter.

The undersigned has good faith belief that use of the material in the manner described herein is not authorized by Camchatty.com or its agents. Under penalty of perjury, the undersigned is authorized to act on behalf of Camchatty.com with respect to this matter.

If these links are not removed within 3 business days, we will have no choice but to file a formal complaint with your hosting company and domain registrar. If this happens they will notify you to take down the offending links or risk having your website shut down or domain name inactivated.

    Sincerely,

    Dan Moore
    Legal Department
    Camchatty.com"

What are the steps we should take in order to get this competitor to stop and penalized for his actions? Can google do anything about this? We are pretty sure we know which competitor is doing this seeing how this person has sent us threatening emails in the past.

I have heard about as well. If contacting webmasters is through contact form they use some random email id which not exist to send request like xxxxxx@mysite.com. If webmasters have there contact email address they won't take action as they get removal request from domain name not associated with the site.

That's crazy! I wonder how many of these other webmasters are actually removing the links? I would send something like this to the garbage. If someone has my email, but doesn't address me by name, F-them. Let them contact my web host.

LOL, there is no legal obligation for you to remove links to a site, almost ever. The rare exception might be something like kiddy porn. I would tell the webmaster to fuck off or simply ignore their email. If they don't send you a C&D by mail then I wouldn't worry about it.

Someone once emailed me once about that, I told them for $50 (for compensation of my time) I would remove the link ... They never responded. haha

Couldn't you just email the sites you have links on and tell them that someone is trying to trick them.

I suppose a safeguard against this would be to have your T1's be a sort of bait so that when someone does this you can then warn everyone.

Your are absolutely right, but most people that are not educated enough when hear something about legal issues act on the moment without any thinking..

This is exactly spot on - I would tell them to fuck off too (or charge $50 for my time on the phone / replying to tell them to fuck off) however it's like any scam - it relies on people being a bit gullible / stupid and preys largely on it threatening legal recourse.

Sucks that competitors are focusing all their efforts on sabotaging their competition instead of scaling their sites to a the point where they own all of the first page results.

    To each their own.
