Would you want a link from a site that asks for a reciprocal link in return? Penalty risk?

Basically I responded as an article source for a reporter and they replied a week later saying they would like a link on our a website as a sign of good gesture and to show them the link within two days.

Basically if I give them a link then they will include me as a source in their article.

Isn't this risky for a regular site to be doing like that?

According to semrush.com their site gets 1,000$ in traffic. I wonder if Google would bust them eventually if they see the number of back and forth links with their site?

    Thanks

This is a good question. I will provide a reciprocal link only if it is a very relevant link, and not for the sake of link building.

For example, they have quoted you in their article and linked to you.

Now you can link to this article with your own piece on the topic. I've done this many times with reporters and honestly, it's pain in the ... but that's what google wants, right? :(

I'm surprised at how amateur this website is and they seem like a legit business. Guess I'll be skipping that link.
