I have been working with this awesome firm and with great people around.. I m good at what I do for the company and able to do my IM work from office. Until recently my office has deployed an Infosec policy which takes away all the freedom I had since last 2 years. My work requires exhaustive research to be done but I can use only IE7 for that.. Access to FB, Gmail, twitter has been revoked.

I am not very much dependent on my Day job for money. Also its a night shift job which hampers my sleep and health. But people say a fixed income is fixed unlike IM which fluctuates all the time.

I want your suggestion what should I do.. Is this my time to leave?

If you have enough to survive for atleast 6 months with your IM income i'd quit. Within those 6 months you should be able to make enough to survive for another 6 months. :)

If you've been able to generate good amount of money through IM, then you should go ahead and quit the job. But, I would suggest you to have a backup plan if your IM plans don't click.
You've two options: 1) Switch to another company and maintain a stable income or 2) Leave 10-5 job and get into full-time IM. If I were at your place, I would assess my financial position and based on that I would make the final decision. I would also consider number of people depending upon my income.

I hope that you take a rational step. All the best. :)

PS: I left a good paying job in a leading social media company couple of years back in order to get into a joint venture with an IMer. I can tell you that it has been one of best decisions of my life. Despite having faced losses and failures, I have never regretted the decision.

Cheers :)

If java is installed you can probably remote access a VPS by means of the vnc applet running off ie7.

I would never leave a good job with good peeps around for an income that fluctuates. If it does it clearly means you haven't diversified your assets / strategies enough in order to have a SOLID online marketing plan, therefore it is certainly too soon for this big move imo. And you know how it goes: if the fluctuation suddenly goes to 0 for any reason (depending on what you actually do), developing and testing a new PROFITABLE IM strategy might not be the best thing to get money fast, right away. Unfortunately them funny humans need to eat every day :)

Get a VPN/VPS or some other way to get a secure tunnel out from work. Just make sure you can access the IP range before you commit to anything.

If you have to ask whether you should quit your job or not, the answer is usually no.

Don't leave - VPN/VPS/Remote into your home computer/use a laptop and keep going to till you get canned.

You can't argue with two paychecks.

Life is short. Do what interests you. I feel you should focus on your online business. You could easily scale up big time during those working hours at your home. I hope you are not working in call center..or is it?

I would think about it if your IM income (AGI) was twice what your day job is (AGI). Otherwise, I would keep scaling until you reached that point.

Do what ever makes you happy at the end of the day. If you are thinking of quitting make sure you have had a steady income from IM for the past 12months to cover all bill and pay you a decent wage. IM can be swings and round abouts so always make sure you've got some secure funds if you come across quiet times.

I have the same problem as you. And a VPS is not allowed as well, it is blocked by the company's proxy.
What I had to do is install a VM in your PC (you will need to be admin of your pc), install a OS of your choice, and then over that OS you can use Team Viewer 8 to remote your home PC. And then you will be able to do everything, slower and with a tedious delay, but you will be able to keep doing what you've been doing.

You can install Team Viewer as well directlly in your PC, but that might be a security problem, depends on your company's rules. In my case I cannot do it, that's why I went to the VM way.

Hope it helps :)

Laptop and verizon 4G card? That would give you access from your desk.

Keep your eggs in many baskets. Your job is one basket. IM another with probably more sub-baskets. Never cut a revenue stream. Just bad advice to do so. I own a store and have for 23 years this July. There are PLENTY of days I ask myself why I bother. When an IM stream gets cut or takes a hit I'm thankful I have this store stream to rely on. When the store sales are flat and no service work to speak of, I'm thankful I have my IM streams paying the bills.

Personally I'd never cut a solid revenue stream.

C,mon Shailzrocks, you are a blackhatter, act like one.

1. You can download Firefox for free if you want and still manage your IE7.

2. You can get a private proxy to bypass the restriction of any site you wish.

In the issue of resigning, the ball is in your court.

I say this because you know better your current monthly income, skills and ability.

If you have been doing well for 9 months and don't rely on your day job then i advice you quite and face IM.

I hate to lose my night sleep for anything...

Good answers so far... Now here I go..

Everything that ruins your health should be avoided. I say fuck night shifts and join me :D

No seriously... How long have you been doing IM and what's your average range of income?

Also like someone pointed out: How many other persons are dependent on your income?

I would say that if you have enough cash to run your business for at least 4 months without generating any profit, then quit your job! If not then I will not advice to do so...act like a Blackhatter and and a way to continue working from your office ;)

Buddy just save as much as you can from IM money and it will let live better than job for year. Fix the money for 1-5 years so that family can get it and use it with time. do not keep cash
to my knowledge with IM you normally make many multiple of fixed job.

To get around limits i would suggest you to get a usb disk with windows xp installed + a 3G or 4G usb dongle, plug them both in company computer and you can boot from your personal OS. :)

wish you best ! buddy

true, however in IM there's no earning cap, you can easily make that kind of money in a month or even in a week what others make in a year with a 9-5 job

"Would you quit your dayjob if?"
actually it happened the other way with me
my day job quit me lol, the company i worked for and where i was a co-owner went bankrupt
i'm glad it's over though, it took too big part of my life

If you're not happy with how things are going, DON'T STRESS OUT OVER IT lol. You aren't bound to work for them. Take a break and maybe more opportunities will open up. At the end of the day, God is going to provide. Go with your gut
