Did some kw research and found a nice niche that has low competition.
The .com emd however when you search g00g, 2 of the top 10 results are niche sites for the same item but they're domains are the plural.

For example, i found smallspaceheater dot com is available but a search result shows smallspaceheaterS dot net and dot org are in the top 10. Both have horrible seo work and are very new sites.

The rest of the results are ebay, amazon etc pages selling the item.
Is it worth giving this a shot considering I'd hope to monetize with amazon and adsense?

From the sounds of it YES. Take advantage of the opportunity before someone else does.

How many searches is that keyword getting per month?
I would base my decision on that.

I don't know what is your niche and what so special about this domain but I don't think they will get 11K.
Nice move on the 9.99, I would offer 9.98 just for spite :)

If you can get it at their normal price or a little bit above then sure. But don't go too much over it, since it's on auction.

There's nothing special about it believe me and they will never get a fraction of that buy now price. It's just godaddy being godaddy.

I love EMD's. I've tried adding an X to the end of the domain if its not available, but it's not the same. I snatch up any and all EMD's available in my niches. Even if you don't develop them yourself, protect yourself from your competitors stealing some of your organic search traffic.
