I have a site where I want to list some addresses, phone numbers, etc.. where my readers can get more information.

The thing is, I'd be copying and pasting this list of addresses, phone numbers, etc.. from another site (a government site).

Would this be considered duplicate content? If so, how can I go about doing this without raising any flags to Google?

I mean, the way I look at it, I'm definitely not the only site that's written this addresses and such, so are all those other sites also being hit with duplicate content penalties?

Just as an example, it's something like this:

    Testing Location 1
123 Main Street, Los Angeles, 90210

    Testing Location 2
345 Main Street, Los Angeles, 90210

    etc..

Try switching around a few words, and try running copyscapes on your information and if it doesn't pass switch around the words but keep the same information.

It would be considered as duplicate content for sure.

The dup content issue is not about putting other people's info on your site, but rather having your own duplicate stuff on your site. Its not going to help you in rankings, but it won't do anything either.

I'd agree 100% with you there. In fact, some information like phone numbers etc will be repeated in thousands of websites. For a good ranking on google places, the address on your website has to be repeated on on every press release, including the periods and commas.

OP.. you can ignore this concern.

I somewhat tend to disagree with some of the posts on this thread. If we understand what caused the fall of major article directories such as Ezine, Goarticles and others then it would be obvious to perceive what Google considers as 'duplicate content'.

Duplicating content on different pages of a website is obviously counter productive and I need not comment on the repercussions of that.

Yeah the fall of ezine etc.. is not a penalty to your site. It was simply the devaluing of those types of links. Just because I had content on ezine and very similar content on goarticles, I find it rather hard for google to penalize my site. I do find it plausible that google will devalue on of those links.

Devaluing a link is totally different then penalizing a site

That's what I was thinking. But I guess the problem is, what I'm copying is a list of addresses and phone numbers. I don't really see any way that I could rewrite those.

Agreed! But I doubt if Google can differentiate. I would try and change the order of data if possible.
