PHP or other programming languages can definitely help you with many things, such as automation and whatnot. However, there are tools available for most of the stuff you would need to do. Knowledge never hurts, but just depends if it's worth your time for what you'll be doing.

Honestly, only you will know if it's worth it if there are some things you can't currently do or buy that you want to do and could do if you could code. So if you have free time and like doing it, i'd say go for it. Although, don't expect to be a master quickly, but you could at least do some simple stuff quickly and/or make modifications to current stuff to better suit your needs.

Oops, forgot to mention, not sure what you meant by creating better landing pages. Coding won't help with design, but it could help with lets say replacing variables to show the keywords in certain places on the page automagically or something similar.

PHP, HTML and Javascript are some of the programming script that people always use to create web site. Therefore learning them can really help you in online business. At least you won't confuse and worry when you want to modify or setup a site for your marketing purpose.

So go ahead and master PHP! :)

PPC really isn't that great for a beginner. In my opinion you'd be better off playing with some web 2.0 properties and doing SEO on them. Doesn't cost anything, and it works. I mean you could try PPC, but you sort of need a lot of spending money to get the hang of it.

Definitely useful. Learn by doing. I have no idea what your skills are, but what I would do is the following:

    Get a domain
    Get hosting
Get an FTP client (filezilla is free and good)
Get wordpress (download the latest from wordpress.org)
Upload wordpress. Get familiar with creating a database on mysql and ftp, what they do, and how they work.
Get crimson editor (great php/text editor)

You can load all of your .php files into crimson editor and edit them there.

Once you've installed your wordpress, load up your mysql database through cpanel and see how it functions.

Check out the header/footer files in your wordpress theme. See how these are usually parts of EVERY page on your site. See how they're designed.

Make changes at random in places of the code that look interesting, upload them, and see what they do visually to your screen. If you get errors, google those errors. You'll see lots of interesting talks about what causes these errors and how they work. Like anything it will look like greek at first, but you can get the hang of php in no time if you put in a few hours a day. you'll gain a lot of valuable knowledge as to how PHP works by doing things WRONG and understanding why.

Wordpress hacking is a good start! Good luck!
