so i have a few AS sites on hostgator all on same account and i have another website that i wanted to test out in a case study mainly consisting of link spam etc. would it be safe to do this or is there a way my other sites could get penalized because it is on the same host provider?

    Thanks.

From the point of view of search engines, that would be ridiculous to decrease/increase ranking of person X just because the website is on shared IP with person Y. For me it's logical that decreasing of rankings of A domain cannot be caused by influencing B domain.

I cannot hide the fact I'm interested in what other BHatters think about it though.

If the site you're planning on spamming is active, you're on a semi-shitty host, and they end up finding out that you're the one spamming, I could see that coming around and biting you in the ass. I'm sure there are AUP/TOS guidelines to your host that would explain that if you're caught maliciously doing something (such as spamming a site, etc.) your hosting account may be terminated. As far as whether or not it'll hurt your website in terms of Google/Bing, I wouldn't worry so much about that.

If you spam too severely you may get the hosting account banned. But that is only if they figure it was you doing the spamming - if they complain, you should be able to sell the spam as "someone else doing negative seo on you" ;). Remember to have whoisguard/domain privacy on the domain you're spamming, so you don't get complaints.

I heard that in such cases google not only looks at IP to exclude situation that somebody is on shared ip with others but also they verify DNS entries if it's clear both sides are yours then maybe... I heard it happens when you cheat on adsense and they find out that several sites are from one person.

Interesting so would you say that the best idea might be to move that site to a completely new host just to be safe or?

I have hosting in godaddy. I am sharing the IP and servers with 3000 other users just from researching the IP my domain is in.
So I don't think so. If siteA is ranking high, and siteB is getting spammed, and all of them are on the same IP, hosting and etc, my conclusion is that it will not matter at all.

However, I had siteA ranking for certain keywords.
I built siteB to rank for the same keywords.
As siteB climbs up, siteA ranks down. So my name in the domain registrar may have something to do with rankings.
It may be just a coincidence though.

It might be a good idea to buy another domain to aim for the same keyword, this time with whois data protection and see how things go.
