I have one main site on separate ip then the 8 niche sites on 2 other separate ip's , the 8 niche sites will be linked to the main site, each with a specific keyword, is that bad ?

I do it this way because of cost cutting

For ranking different sites having them on the same IP is not going to make any difference.

If however you are trying to get benefit from the links pointing to your main site then it will be somewhat limited if all your incoming links are from the same IP. Not bad, there will be no penalty but just not as much juice as you would from eight non connected sites.

Now IP is not the only thing to look at, you have ownership, nameservers, etc so unless these sites have a lot of juice the benefit from going to the trouble of really splitting them up is most likely not worth the time and expense.
