So in my ventures I meet and talk to a bunch of local "web design & seo" firms. Most very small and only kind of knowing what they are doing. Moreso on the SEO side of things than their designs.

Anyway after seeing that one of them was building their clients websites on squarespace.com i was puzzled. "Why on earth are you charging a client that much to build their website on a subdomain of another company?"

His response was it was returning great SEO results in Google for his local customers!

Now I want to know the following:
Would a subdomain xxxx.squarespace.com be able to leverage any of the root domains (squarespace.com) link juice?
If so could you buy the cheapest squarespace package and 301 redirect it to your site?
Or does this guy have no clue and just getting lucky with super easy local customer niches?

Is there some value in being on a sub-domain of a major website? Sure, but its minuscule if you ask me. For everyone squarespace site that ranks highly for its local keyword I am sure there are plenty who don't.

Local niches and proper backlinking would help far more - most of these subdomains sites are cheap and unprofessional, and yet professional independent websites seem far more common in your average search results.

All in all is there some link juice - yes, is it really a game changing amount? No
