Just looking at expiring domains on GoDaddy auctions and I found a PR2 (determined using scrapebox) domain that's 8 years old. The domain is short(ish) and related to my niche...

...is this site worth $10+ (i.e. is it worth buying)
...will this site be easier to rank than a fresh one?

It's already got some indexed links, but the old content is a bit off-topic.

What do you guys think? I'm happy to PM the link and if anyone beats me to it, c'est la vie!

    Hi seocrab,

to be honest, it's just 10 bucks. This is nothing compared to other expenses you will have developing the domain. If you have a nice feeling about the domain and if you can imagine it's purchase will motivate you, just go for it. Otherwise, you'll never know!
    All the best

That's a good point, maybe I'm being cheap! But I find about 10 of these good domains every day so if I bought them all, I'd go broke...

I always go with domain age over PR (PR can be built quicker than age), plus google doesn't seem to mind ranking PR0 sites, so is the PR hunt worthless at this stage?

I'd say yes, since it's only $10. The risk/reward ratio is good.

Depends, what does the backlink profile look like? How many times has it been dropped/deleted?

Whenever you are choosing the old domains, always check the backlinks and number of indexed pages. If that is low, then you can easily move with new one.

Sure yeah, I mean, registering a new domain would cost you the same, so why not pay the same for a PR2?

check backlinks with ahrefs and if you find too little or no backlinks then domain will lose it's PR in the next update so it becomes better to start with a fresh domain to guarantee no bad history gets carried over.

    thanks for the tips.

a new domain would be much cheaper, this is $10+ domain renewal, so more like $16.

it has 3 indexed pages and no backlinks i can see. Site has been dead for a while now.

RE: linksmaster - so low links and low indexed links is good?

RE: antichrist - how can i tell if it's been dropped?

PR2 for $10 is worth it but there won't be any significant impact on your ranking if you are buying just that and low PR too.

A little mix and more will do the magic.

Also, be careful when buying those so called high pr sites on Godaddy, most of them are crap and fake PR.

    Always do your check.

I would say look it up on majesticseo and see if it gets any trust/citation flow. If it doesn't it's probably better just starting a new one.

You could also check out it's domain/page authority.

I don't believe that PR affects how you rank on Google, but I could be wrong. However, the domain age will help you rank on google, and the PR will be great for any backlinks you build out of your site. For $10, I'd make the investment, worst case scenario is you lose $10 which is like nothing.

8 years domain age is worth $250 easily, for the long range seo benefits. No matter the PR, or even if it had been under penalty, 8 years is a LOT of domain authority, and PR will come fast to such a site if you do it right. I would buy it even if it was de-indexed.

If you don't buy it, send me the details, I probably will depending on the niche.

Anyone selling a 5 + year (domain age) domain name for $10 bucks, PM me.

Is there any benefit from de-indexed domains? Can they be re-used for backlinking?

Thanks, I always check for fake PR with scrapebox (there are so many 301 redirects, it's ridiculous).

Thanks for the advice. I bought it . I usually look for 10+ year old sites, but the 8 years + pagerank seems to be worth it.

Is the domain on the auction list? There are hidden costs other than the 10$ plus so you will want to contact godaddy to identify them if you are very cautious about the costs. My guess it will go to about 25$ after everything.
As for the domain name, like what the rest have mentioned, if you have a good feeling about the domain, go for it.

Yep, it's $10 for the domain, plus the annual renewal fee. You can use coupons to get that right down. It usually works out £10 for the whole thing for me (that's about $15).
