    Hi,
I've been doing some searching around to try and find domains that used to have websites on them and that have great links that are still in place, and I've found a few but don't know whether to buy them or not.

Most have only a handful of links but they are great quality from top class universities (and they're proper links on news pages, etc, not blogs or comments), the BBC news website, wikipedia, major UK newspapers, etc.

For example domain 1 has 3 links from different pages on a major university website, each page is a PR6.

domain 2 has links from 3 universities, a link from wikipedia (PR3), and 2 links from the BBC news website from 2006.

    domain 3 has pr3, 4, & 5 links and a BBC link.

    etc

Is it worth buying domains with links like these, and if I do then should I put the old site back on it as far as possible or make it into something new but related?

    Thanks.

These are ones that are free to register, so they've had a site on them and it eventually wasn't needed and the domains allowed to drop.

Finding them with a lot of hard work and some tricks I've worked out - but mainly a lot of hard work.

They sound pretty good to me. I would pick them up.

Now, what you do with the site, it a matter of opinion. If you want to try and make those links last long term, recreate the content that used to be on the site so there won't be an incentive for them to drop the links. This tends to work well if you are staying in the same type of niche. What i tend to like to do is repurpose the existing site into something useful, and then attempt to funnel visitors to non adsense offers, or to my money site. With this approach, it makes the website a lot less likely to be found by google as a footprint. Yes, it's more work, but the detection level is nil.

Now, if the site is being used for more of an all purpose non-niche related site, that's a different story. I've created totally off topic blogs from what the incoming links are. They still provide link juice, but don't work as well as the method I listed above.

Any site with existing PR backlinks is worth picking up, but you should look at OBL on those links. Just cuz it's PR 6 doesn't help all that much if the OBL is 600.

But damn, they sound pretty decent.

    Hi,
the ones I'm looking at all have low OBL like 5 to 15, I did see one with links from Harvard but the page had about 1000 OBLs so I deleted that from my list.

    Cheers guys for your opinions

You can also look previous content up on archive.org and see what the site was up to and why it was abandoned.

Is there any issue with copyright - can you just recreate the content?

Technically, yes, there are issues with copyright. Although i've heard of MANY people reusing the same content. The factors you need to think about are:

    - Is the company still in business? (if they aren't the chances of them coming after you are pretty slim)
    - If you can't tell who the copyright holder is...weigh the chances of them actually going back to the site to look at it.
    - Does it looks like repurposed content? If it is the same content that seems to be everywhere..who cares

If you look at the link profile and it looks good that is a starts, but another thing to consider is if the links will remain for a long period of time. Have a look though the websites and check if they are updated regularly and if they aren't you should have a couple of good purchases!

Man, go get them. They are pure gold and having real backlinks from true authority sites itself is a huge plus.

    Thanks guys,
yes the links look like they've been there for at least 2 years already, some of them for 8 years so I doubt they'll be removed any time soon.

I'm going to buy some of them I'm not sure about the ones with just one or 2 university links.

Grab them and don't look back! You can put the old site back up, but you don't have to. You can put some related content and let it get indexed like that. After a month or so you can use it for whatever you want.
