Hey Does Anyone Know Just What it Takes To Build A Game Like WOW? Can it be outsource??
Is this a real question? I think you can get it done really cheap, lets say 4-6 million dollars... If you just want to play it your own, marketing will cost another 100-200 million tough...
Guess what the gaming industry makes more money than the movie and music industry put together and i read that blizzard takes 40% out of this for wow alone!
Lol! Uhh yeah I guess it could.. but with all the development, testing, etc I would venture a guess in the hundreds of thousands if not millions?
its takes tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars of capital, years to develop it, and a shitload of coders and progammers.
if you wanted to make something like runescape, maple story, or neopets, that might be a little easier. but it takes a TON of work
Oh well i was off, the rumors are that blizzard spent 60 mio USD for the developement of WOW and I think they can reuse many LOC (Lines of Code). Did not know that its so expensive because they don't deliver a over the top graphic engine etc. and the game mechanics arent inventitive at all i.e. boring ;-)
But if i think about it, its cheap anyway, I had quite a lot of professors at my university that had experience as software project managers in projects that cost more than 50 to 100 Mio Dollars, so it isn't that big of a number.
Its not in that context, iam a software engineer so i know what it costs to build a big software system, its incredible expensive. Something like linux would cost at least 2 billion dollars to build it nowadays commercially, not included the costs of all the parts that where thrown away and stoneage technology used then. Software engineers are very expensive, software management even more. I guess a SAP installation for a worldwide company costs about 50 mio. usd initally and another 10 mio. yearly and thats a software that is already made!
Have you ever tried to program just a simple line and block game where you can make lines move? It takes some time and devotion just to develop that.. but to build an entire world filled with so many different options, then there's where things go amiss and all the bugs you have to deal with.
World Of Warcraft has 10 million subscribers all paying at least 13/monthly to play that game and they have undoubtedly probably thousands of game designers/programmers/testers and what not.
I just know that I've taken the time to create a tiny little simple program that does the basic function of making a pop up box, and I know the time involved with that.. I guess you could try to create a game like World Of Warcraft, but I don't recommend it unless you are a robot.
That would be a very boring game then ;-)
Wasn't there actually a bot for this game and the creator got sued?
I believe it was called the Glider bot?
Youre absolutely right about that, blizzard sued MDY the company of Michael Donnelly and got at least a partial success because now every _User_ of the glider bot can be sued for copyright infringement. The 10.6 million dollars blizzard wanted from MDY are not to be payed tough. Currently blizzard wants to prevent MDY from releasing their source code as open source.
The USA is a strange country, I don't get their laws! Completely consumption centered culture and laws, but when it comes to the internet, intellectual property and patents they like to f**k the consumer.
The US is a "I'll sue you!" type of country.. it's illegal to take matters into your hands and you can sue anyone for just about anything. Did you hear about the woman who Sued McDonalds because she spilled hot coffee on herself and won? Seriously.. come on!
Instead of proceeding forth with a lawsuit against the creator of Gliderbot, they should have went forth to his house and beat him down Mob Style and left him a bloody mess. I guarantee you, he stops making programs for that company and he'll think twice before creating exploits/bots to any game for that matter.
I would not buy my 5 $ if i would start a computer game it would need to be something inventive and new, iam so bored of the newest game ripped off of movie pt. 4. Nearly nobody in the entertainment industry has the balls to try something new these days.
I hate it when people are rewarded for their stupidity and I hate it when big companies can destroy lifes because they have a lot of money. I love mob style actions, but only in tv, if somebody would come to my home and beat the shit out of my it won't be so funny anymore. Altough i know some badass mofos who would get back at them later...
The US lawsystem is extreme curios to me and yes i heard about that old lady and piles of other crap sentences. We europeans love this kind of stories because then we can think we're so much superior.
Funny things on hxxp://www.dumblaws.com/ btw.
damn diz is more than i was asking for it takes between 50-100 millions juz to build a fucking game? fuck that i think im going to earn couple of billions doing something else then invest in the game later on.
Sure, what did you think it would cost?
you should think smaller yet bigger...i would outsource sombody to make me one of those apps for myspace and facebook. these guys have to be making a killing. they have cpa offers incorporated into the games to get more point/addons. and for those that dont want to do the cpa offers, you can purchase more points to get addons via paypal. this would be a great avenue. the mobsters app is very popular. so something along those lines could be very profitable yet not take a shitload of money to have done for you.
a lot of the games for the new systems are easy to finish. they dont make them like they did when the nes was king. it would take months and months to beat games. unless it was one of those you had to play all day to beat because it didnt have save codes. and it would still take a long time to beat because they were hard as hell. the graphics sux compared to todays, but i can pick up any nes game and get way more fun out of it. most of todays games dont have that quality where you just want to play it over and over again. i beat these new games and its time to trade it in for something new.
Unless your millionaire don't try.
You could do browser game. I actually tried to do that once but I was really out of money so stopped my project.
I'll put in $5 too, yeah... I think that may buy one pixel of hair for one of the characters :cool2:
I think if Darkfall ever gets released it will be some competition for WOW.
