I have a little problem and I'm not sure how to deal with it.

On my website there are users. People register, choose nicknames, upload a profile picture and description some of them, and that's all good.

The problem is that those user profiles get indexed, and my theme seems to be set in the way so that all those user profile pages have the same meta description - they all have the homepage's meta description!

As far as I know having 100s of "indexed pages" from a website that all have the same meta description is a duplicate content problem and will harm my SEO efforts.

Okay, good. But, I cannot insert a custom meta description for those user-profiles, because that would take too long and I would always have to do it for every new member. But the main problem is that I have no option to do it in the theme. Like, even the profile pictures people upload, I can't locate them and add alt tags or anything to them, because they don't appear in my Media page. I don't know where the hell are those photos stored.

Then I thought about making all those user profiles noindex, but for all the tag pages and category pages and post pages that Yoast SEO allows me to set noindex, I get no options to do anything for user profile pages. So I can't noindex them.

The best thing would be for the user profile pages to pick up the decsriptions users insert for themselves on their profiles, and to use that as the meta description. And then only if a user didn't insert any description on his/her profile then it could fall back to the homepage's meta description.

So you see my problem. Those user profile pages are... I am unable to do anything with them basically, and that will harm my SEO.

Anyone has any suggestions for what I should do?

I don't think so that, it can hurt your site. Also, you don't need to do it no-index. Meta description is not necessary for search engine. :)

Meta description is not a ranking factor. What should worry you is if the profiles have enough of a difference not to trigger panda & penguin. If you feel they're not adding value, no reason to keep them around. Just add them to your robots.txt
