    Hi BHW,,

    I am trying to get multisite to work on my wordpress but I cannot do it!

    I have followed the exact instructions on the wordpress site and Googled for help for a couple of days.

    The issue I have is, I have it installed, I changed the php and htaccess files correctly, I added the wildcard DNS subdomain, and I create a site. It creates the subdomain fine, but when the subdomain propagates, it just gives me the hostgator starting page rather than the wordpress install.... WHY?!?!

    Help PLEASE :)

    htaccess should same not change it, if you mod rewrite a URL then change from permaters.

    I don't quite understand what you mean. I changed the htaccess exactly how it asked me to in the installation

    I had alot of problems with mine when I first set it up. I stared at the code for like an hour going thru every little syllable. What I ended up doing its cutting and pasting the whole section in all over again and some how it worked differently.

    Also some hosting services dont let your use wordpress mu. You might be fine since you where able to do the wild card dns. I ended up on just getting a https://www.digitalocean.com/ server. I actually had alot of fun learning how to set up my LAMP server. It was a pain in the butt thou. One more thing, Wordpress mu is a resource whore and your hosting will end up suspending your account or whatever other faggy stuff they like to do.

    If you installed WP on the subdomain, delete the .htaccess and upload a new one. If that didn't work, retry it again. Good luck!

    It works on hostgator, I have done it multiple times. You have to add a cname record(or A record. Forgot who's who lol. One is for IP and another one is for domain) and add *.domain.com which forwards to domain.com.

    btw, if you just did it then wait for 2 days or so and clear your DNS resolver cache as well as browser cache and cookies.

    Yes if he was trying to do domain forwarding. Hes trying to get the initial install working properly and already stated he did the wild card dns.

    If he is migrating an new domain. If he is upgrading an old domain everything should work immediately.... Should...

    I guess it's a new one as his OP states.

    OP to flush the dns resolver cache go to cmd and type

    ipconfig /flushdns
    Clear your browser cache and view again ( keep pressing ctrl + f5 until you are sure it is not working). View from another computer and internet connection if possible.

    Where does it state that hes installing it on an new domain? He actualy stated that hes been working on it for days now, so infact if it was a new site its DNS would have been resolved.

    Read bro

    LOL I am not gonna fight.
    What I suggested him is the most common problem faced with WP multi site installations. Let him try it out ;)

    Not fighting you did post some useful information here, like flushing your browser cache and host gator does allow wordpress mu installs.

    Thanks Gogol and Lagger. :)

    I'm not sure I did the cname/A class DNS stuff right. all I did was the wildcard subdomain. But what I do know, it creates the new subdomain but gives me this:

    [IMG]

    Is that problem with the MU installation, or the DNS?

    Thats how I set up the wildcard DNS. the IP is the same on all DNS records

    the image in the previous post is an account I made in MU, but it does not create the subdomain.

    the test.s**** subdomain is one I created manually, but when I go to the site, it gives a 404 error.

    Code:
    #Use PHP 5.4
    AddType application/x-httpd-php54 .php
    <IfModule mod_suphp.c>
    suPHP_ConfigPath /opt/php54/lib/php.ini
    </IfModule>

    # BEGIN WordPress
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]

    # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
    RewriteRule ^wp-admin$ wp-admin/ [R=301,L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule ^ - [L]
    RewriteRule ^(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $1 [L]
    RewriteRule ^(.*\.php)$ $1 [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

    This is the .htaccess file.

    Code:
    /* Multisite */
    define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );

    define('MULTISITE', true);
    define('SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL', true);
    define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', '*****.uk');
    define('PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/');
    define('SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);
    define('BLOG_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);

    /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

    this is the wp-config.php file.
