I was trying to install a wordpress and other cms development environment, MAMP is the environment I have chosen.
What's so cool about MAMP is that it leaves the system database and apache settings alone and runs in a virtual environment so you can feel free to experiment without having to worry about what will happen to your system configuration. I had heard it was easy to set up but had a little difficulty with one part, I looked on line for a solution and stumbled across this video which showed me what I was doing wrong. I wish I would have seen this video earlier it would have saved me a lot of time!

NOTE mamp is for os x but wamp is similar and this method should work just as well for wamp under windows.
