So probably kind of a noob question. Client had a LOT of content on their home page about a single topic, they recently updated their homepage to where it is clean, more corporate looking. All the past SEO was done to the home page (with all the content). What happens now? Will google rank the site lower now that the content is gone, or start ranking a sub page that talks about the same content.

Would adding current blog posts to the home page help with "content" even though its like the same as the blog page ("duplicate content")

Sounds like the client has screwed themselves

Site will need re-structuring now, so that the inner pages support the home page with content

Well the site is mostly already set up like that. There are like, 300 pages. And blog posts. But the home page had the main topic, a long 1000 or more word article, and they were doing SEo to front page, but I have been doing it on the inner pages. I personally do not think it will matter, as mostly the inner pages are starting to rank, and google kind of directed keyword/traffic to the inner pages now. But I am not 100% certain on this.

    Mandude,
Unless they are trying to get their home page to rank for a specific term which they removed from the page, it won't really matter. Search engines find, index and serve web pages and not entire domains. The home pages is just one other page. If they want that page to rank for a certain keyword phrase, then they will have to optimize it for that. Ranking inner pages however is just as effective because users are finding the information they need and they are still visiting the website.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

If the home page was ranking for anything, that was an incredibly foolish thing to do, and it won't rank more.

Using blog posts on the home page of a business site is stupid, the content will constantly be changing and the Search Engines will never figure what the site is about.

You will be lucky if the backlinks are even relevant if they changed a lot of content.
