I wonder what is the best word order and word combination when choosing a domain name.

Lets say I want to rank for "cool gadgets".

Now here are some options. How would you rank these options with the best at the top and worst at bottom.

    1. coolgadgets.com/net/org/info
    - surely the best but often not available.

    2. gadgetscool.com/net/org/info
    - Is this a better option than the one below?

    3. cool-gadgets.com/net/org/info

    4. gadgets-cool.com/net/org/info

    5. coolgadgetsthirdword.com/net/org/info

    6. cool-gadgets-thirdword.com/net/org/info

Right now I am trying to decide between these two options:

    gadgets-cool.com/net/org/info

    and

    cool-gadgets-thirdword.com/net/org/info

Which one should I go for?

I would choose 3. cool-gadgets.com/net/org/info if coolgadgets.com/net/org/info are taken already

A good choice. Just a little addition, I think the tld is not that different as it is explained. I have 2 info domains on the listings with high search results.

You know, many say that hyphens in a domain name don't affect seo/serps but I have a LOT of local business sites in one particular niche and the two domains with hyphens are taking WAY more work to rank highly than the rest which are all at #1 for their main keywords.
    I don't think this is a coincidence.

I agree with you. One of my website with hypen took almost a month to outrank a exact domain websites which is having less backlinks when compared to mine for the same keyword.

    Thanks for the answers.

You seem to agree that it is a good idea to avoid hyphens. But what about the keyword order and adding an extra word?

    Would you rather choose:

    4. gadgets-cool.com/net/org/info OR gadgetscool.com/net/org/info

    Compared to:

    5. coolgadgetsthirdword.com/net/org/info

Actually I never go after a keyword if there is no exact match domain available unless there is less competition. I have never tried adding additional keywords before or after main keywords, but I have seen many sites ranking well with additional keywords added before or after. First page competition is what you have to care about.

    Don't touch the REP!

    coolgadgets1.com
    coolgadgetsdeal.com

    coolgadgetsdeals.com
etc, etc assuming the 1st choice coolgadgets.com is taken.

If coolgadgets.com ranks well you can catch the draft with similar name.

I agree hyphens don't seem to do as well as no hyphens.

    HTH .... :cool2:

I have had great luck WITH hyphens. G lucks at them same as a space. They can rank better then no spaces.

OP - consider the singular as well.

    coolgadget.com
cool-gadget.net (this is the format of my #2 performer)

When you search for something you search for the singular. You don't want to buy iphone caseS you want an iphone case.

i think no issue with hyphens.. i had ranked a site within 3 month using total Grey hat SEO not black hat or any tool, it was with double hyphens in domain and domain age was of 1 year old not so much old, domain was like
    example: http://www.a-b-c.com
