I was doing some basic link building for a new niche site and found an old site where I commented on one of their posts, then found my link in the footer as a 'recent comment' which appears on all pages. After checking ahrefs on my site I saw that site was providing over 4000 backlinks. Is this alarming and punishable by Google or is it a really awesome find? My site is only 2 months old and hasn't really started ranking for much so I have no way to know if anything was affected other than not seeing an immediate boost.

Prob. no follow, so it won't even matter. If not it could go both ways.

The links are likely no follow links if nothing has happened to your site since the links were discovered. If they were do follow, you'd have seen a fluctuation in your rankings even if your site hasn't started ranking well for any terms.

If links are do-follow then Google obviously gives you a gift of strong penalty. BTW build quality do-follow backlinks and diversify your link building campaign help your SERP to boost, if niche is low competitive then it'll also rank soon.

They are definitely no-follow. I have found a few do-follow comment areas, forums that aren't this one, and profile links that are do-follow.

Google discounts sitewide links like that. As Aty said, its nothing to worry about.

Just make few more comments without links until your link disappears from recent comments.

Related to this: I have seen other niche sites get on a permanent side bar for resources similar to a blogroll on high quality sites. Are those all discounted and Google only counts that as one good do-follow link? Thanks for your answer.

Well Google algorithm identifies blogrolls with the div tags. If a site uses a different tag than the default one it may work but still, sitewide links are generally not that much effective as it was in last year and only a single link will be taken into account. PBN is the way to go in 2014.

Disclaimer : I'm in no way work with google so my answers here are derived from my own experiments.

I thinks someone created it intentionally , its better to disavow them.
