I bet if this is an actual product; and it doesn't seem to be; that MS will fuck it up.

Apple products IMO always seem to require the user to adapt to their hardware instead of vice versa.

I had to get used to a shitty battery life on my iphone
I had to get used to no multitasking on my iphone
I had to get used to itunes trying to manage everything
I had to get used to a non standard connector (so hard to add usb?)

That said, MS seem incapable of making something thats fun to work with, and quick. You can fix all the problems above, but if it runs like a koala bear, it wont matter how cute it looks when the forest is on fire.

"CES 2010: No Microsoft Courier In Sight
Submitted by cjs on Jan. 9, 2010

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced a tablet computer this week at the 2010 Consumer electronics show, however it was a far cry from the Courier. Ballmer referred to the device as a "slate PC" and announced that Microsoft would be partnering with Hewlett-Packard on the product.

The tablet will run Windows 7 and support multi-touch. Pricing is said to be under $500 and the device should hit shelves later this year. Response to the Microsoft tablet was underwhelming, as many had hoped for a Courier prototype unveiling.

Microsoft and HP stock prices actually dropped after the announcement. Even the New York Times had reported that a "revolutionary" tablet PC was going to be on display at CES, contributing to the hype.

Ballmer described the slate PC as "a beautiful little product," and explained that the device is something that's "almost as portable as a phone and that's as powerful as a PC running Windows 7." In the demo, the HP tablet was running a Kindle book reading application.

By announcing the slate PC at CES, Microsoft may be trying to steal some thunder from another rumored tablet. Apple is widely expected to announce their own take on the tablet form factor at a special event at the end of the month. Renderings or prototypes of the Apple device have yet to be seen.

Microsoft faces serious challenges in the mobile space from both Android OS and Apple. Releasing a production version of the Courier could be just what they need to keep in the game."

interesting, but as I get older, I want better speech recognition in order to minimize typing (or in this product, writing). Wonder if that is built in as well?

    Microsoft Cancels Its "Courier" Tablet

    Nicholas Carlson
    Apr. 29, 2010

Microsoft has ceased development on the Courier, a two-screen tablet computer the company hoped would compete with Apple's iPad.

Gizmodo reports, "Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer informed the internal team that had been working on the tablet device that the project would no longer be supported."

Microsoft never officially acknowledged the Courier's existence, and the gadget always felt more like a marketing stunt than a real product.

Reached by Gizmodo, Microsoft spokesperson Frank X. Shaw seemed to suggest the Courier was always just a concept gadget that Microsoft designed the same way automakers design concept cars. He told Gizmodo:

At any given time, we're looking at new ideas, investigating, testing, incubating them. It's in our DNA to develop new form factors and natural user interfaces to foster productivity and creativity. The Courier project is an example of this type of effort.

It will be evaluated for use in future offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at this time.

Someone at Microsoft leaked details of the Courier to Gizmodo last fall. Then, in March, someone at Microsoft leaked more details of the Courier to Engadget.

i think it's all a publicity stunt...kinda like the 'leaked'/'lost' new iphone found at a bar.

but i'd go for it instead of the ipad...super duper coolness

Flop, doesn't have an Apple logo on it so people won't buy it.

Lol - good point. It's a pity they've canceled it because what the market really REALLY needs is collection of alternatives so that Apple doesn't become the only brand (really) with a say on what a 1) stylish, 2) ultra-portable, 3) easy to use device should be.

I'm neither pro Apple nor pro Microsoft (since I'm irritated by both at times for different reasons), but if Microsoft/Windows-based manufacturers would step up their game a bit it would benefit all parties in the long run because that would force Apple to stay on their toes.

Hell, a Linux, open-source based tablet concept would be cool too :). Options options options.
