without changing anything else, how much does a responsive layout help?

    For example, imagine you had a site that ranked well, but then dropped a bit and you don't have a responsive design. Upon changing to a responsive structure are you going to get a good increase in appearance?

    Yes Google has now started a separate index for mobile friendly sites and so you will stand a much better chance at ranking for your target terms in Google mobile if responsive.

    Apart from that, it also makes for a better user experience when someone visits your site on their phone.

    Not necessarily, you should not change the theme.
    Plan a blog from scratch.
    If you change a theme, usually the index will decline from google
