I think the David vs Goliath analogy is wrong here. Let's not forget for one second that he was selling access to paid "things" developed by others.
I mean, if I have a company that develops something and I find that ILLEGALLY, he was selling my nulled too/plugin or whatever, I will fuck him hard.
That's the basics here.
I wish him the best, but the idea of going to court to fight this is mind-blowing. - the guy was selling stolen stuff.
IMHO, this must be an example for everyone and play fair.
There is enough money and methods to help you make a living.

If I'm not mistaken what he did should be legal, since those plugins all have to be GPL licensed to be part of the WordPress ecosystem, which allows to freely modify and redistribute the code as long as it stays open-source and GPL licensed.
This is a super interesting case and I wish Festinger Vault to come out on top of it.
Developers are free to write codes in any license & apply strict licensing requirement. Devloper know the limitations of GPL license. The reason wordpress is widely popular because of GPL. Plugins distribution may be unethical, but nothing illegal.

When it comes to using and developing with the WordPress framework developers can not freely use any licensing they want, they are forced to use the GPL as it is a must for using the WordPress framework if they want to offer their themes or plugins to the public free or paid. Only privately used plugins and themes within their own business is exempt from a forced GPL license.
