I have 2 laptops sitting right next to eachother.

1 - HP pavillion getting 3-4 bars of signal
2 - Toshiba Satellite harman getting 0-1 bar

DOes anyone have a clue of why the signals are so different and is there anything I can do to get the signal better on the toshiba?

Any tips or tricks out there?

    Hi, Explicit.

What Router brand you have? As gateway? ..

Try to move that to another place where you live.

    Found this. Maybe can help.

has to do with what wireless card each laptop uses. The toshiba appears to have a better wireless card.. getting a better router can help

Stop stealing my connection and spamming with it goddammit!

Just kidding. It´d be an honor to have a neighbor that´s a mod in here.

Well just to make it clear, I am not stealing it. I know the guy and my inet is having issues right now and wont be fixed till sometime next week. He knows I am on his network and he is cool with it. And I dont do anything BH on it, No music, emailing, or anything else.

All I do is use is to log into here, and upload files for clients that I do designing for.

    HAD TO EDIT:

Wonder if he would think I was weird if I went over and did this to his router...lol

well if you know the guy... see what router has right now.. prolly cheap. Then go and buy one of the new ones out for 150 or so... or do some research and see what router has the best signal strength etc

if your neighbor has that kind of router which is on the yt vid - it seems to be a Linksys WRT54GL for me (i'm using the same type) - then you can try to measure the radio noise floor
there has to be an option somewhere in the router configuration menu if you're using the web interface to access it, i'm not perfectly sure about this tho, because when i last used this function i've used the router with a modded firmware (tomato) not the retail one and since then i changed back to the retail firmware and i haven't used this function

using this function helped me a few times when i had weak signal, but it can be it's not helping in your case and the signal is poor in itself

I don't think it's the router, since the HP computer runs fine. My guess is that you have either a atheros wireless card or an intel 3945. My toshiba satellite had the same problems. link starts off okay but then dropped to real slow speeds. Problem has to do with a few things. bad networkcard, wrong settings and bad drivers
I did this to solve my problems.

download the latest drivers unpack in a folder

go to devicemanager select networking and right click the NIC for properties
choose tab update devicedriver select folder with the new driver.

after update go to energy management or power saver tab unthick the save power by shutting down or something similar.

    select properties of your nic
Switch the power setting on your Wireless Adapter to "Max" or "Always On".
Turn your Wireless Adapter's romaing tendency to "conservative" or "minimum".

Other solutions are OS specific so if it is n't working i would have to know more.

Just out of curiosity do the laptops have a different OS? Iupgraded to Win 7 and noticed improved performance probably because of a different WIFI driver.

Ok, got the wireless thing back to working. I cannot figure how to do

    select properties of your nic
Switch the power setting on your Wireless Adapter to "Max" or "Always On".
Turn your Wireless Adapter's romaing tendency to "conservative" or "minimum".

    Where is the nic?

Sorry for the newb questions, but would rather ask than mess something up again

    I don't remember
If moving the box and updating the drivers doesn't help, you can click on the properties of your adapter and see if you can tweak the power settings.

If nothing else works, before shelling out ca$h try searching on G for "cantennas", it's a DIY trick but that might help or solve your reception problem.
