    Hello,

I'm freshmen in VPS hosting and I have few questions.

I'm going to purchase VPS, I just want to know what can I expect out of it. :)

I have sort of list of questions that I need answers to, so any help will be appreciated! :)

I don't expect shared 100mpbs to be at that speed, I expect 5-10mbps. That's cool with me as I'm on 1mb now, so that's pretty slow...

#1 Am I going to be able to run software just as I'm going to run it from my own computer only faster? Meaning, I log in, start software and will it grab results at let's say 5mb (as it's VPS speed) instead of my 1mb speed?

#2 Can I start whatever software I want there and it will run like on my computer - just faster?

#3 Am I going to be able to have Apache/MySQL there (or it's pre-installed)?

#4 If I connect to VPS and start software to run, then I disconnect, will that software keep running until it finishes or until I check on it?

#5 If I download file from web or if I have it on VPS and I want to upload it on some other place on the web (let's say video), will it be uploaded by VPS speed or my speed? :)

Thank you all for your answers upfront. :)

I know some of the questions will seem silly, but I'm complete newbie in this and answering to ANY of those questions will do well for me.

    Tnx again. :)

You know, there are free VPS (VPN is the more correct word) so you can try one of those for the basic technicalities. Not the best speeds but the environment is the same.

    1. yes
    2. yes
    3. cost issue
    4. yes
    5. vps speed

    Thank you for answers!

Can you please recommend me one of those free ones? I know that I should search it up on google, but recommendation is different. :)

    Thank you!

    this guy is right

#3 is all about whether or not they have it installed or not, it may cost extra , it may not cost extra.

a typical windows vps will be faster for the most part, it takes 30 seconds for mine to boot, and then takes a good 1 minute to start my programs up.
    roughly.
im running on a shared vps at 100mbps
i generally get around 40-70 mbps
so i think you will get more than 5

Thank you. At least I know what questions to ask my future VPS provider. :)

What's your shared VPS, can you let me know please? If not here, via PM please.

    Thank you!

I archived 2 good posts when I was in your situation (well was actually trying to get through the kid protection my dad enabled on the router) but they are ancient by now. Not sure which ones still offer the free option.

BTW, things to be aware of if you are planning to go with some year long package later on:
    1. You may find yourself on an overselled server with no way out and 1mbps/sec
    2. Many countries are censoring the Internet and / or have laws that require logging so if the server is located there you won't be able to watch everything on youtube or it may turn out that your supposedly anonymous activities are not so anonymous as advertised. Big hint: USA, the EU, Australia.

So if you decide to take this into consideration, make sure you know the exact geo location.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you don't need to download any extra software to test VPNs. They are accessed through Windows. If some site tries to offer you some download, move on.
