    Does anyone agree?

XP was good. Then they made Vista, which was garbage.

Then they made Windows 7 which is okay. Now they have Windows 8 which is garbage too.

Sometimes I think Windows and Microsoft try to hard to bring new things rather than perfecting one.

I have been thinking about giving Linux a shot for the longest time, I think I may start the new year off with a new operating system.

Windows has it's habit of alternating between good and bad releases!! :p So expect windows 9 to be good too and windows 10 to be bad :)

Stick with Windows 7 and get a tool to delete the restore points and updates backups, something like tuneup utilities. Those actually take up a large portion of the disc space.

Use Google Drive or a similar service to store your important files. That way if your computer fails or crashes then you lost not much.

So far I'm not liking Windows 8, it's annoying.

I only use Linux now for my laptop. I personally use Ubuntu due to easy compatibility and a windows VM for any programs I need to run and games. :p
I see no use of windows unless everything you do is in windows. Linux OS's use A LOT less CPU and RAM too, it's very nice. :)

If you're looking for a Linux distro to try out, I recommend Linux Mint (w/ Cinnamon Desktop). http://linuxmint.com/

Linux Mint is great, I first found out about it when it was at version 8. Didn't really use it though because although I loved it I find it hard to migrate to Linux when I use software that will only work on Windows. I'm currently debating on migrating though I would dual boot with Windows just so that I can still use Windows software. When I get a more powerful PC I will think about using VirtualBox instead and sticking to Linux 100% but that won't be easy after all these years with Windows.

PS. Why did you recommend the Cinnamon desktop? That's the one I've got installed on one of my laptops but I also quite like the MATE one. Think I will reinstall and try that one out unless there's a specific reason not to.

How do you deal with drivers? With a win vm do you notice much difference in speed, etc?

Although, I currently use 7, IMO nothing yet has compared to xp. I HATE everytime I run a program it asks me for permission lol. Thats not the only thing, but to me xp was so much more simple. :)

I prefer Windows 7 over XP, then again I'm quite young so that may be a factor. In regards to the permission thing, you can disable it.

I have written many threads about Windows 8 and the primary problem was MS, I should say Steven Spinofsky, decided to chase the tablet crowd rather than take care of the legacy desktop users. I agree its annoying but Startdock's start menu program rectifies a lot that was wrong with the release from the interface point of view.

I reccomend Ubuntu if you want to try Linux but you will still need a Widows release for many IM applications.

I was like that when it came to PlayStation. I had a PlayStation 1 and it was the best console ever. PlayStation 2 was about to come out and I kept saying that it will be rubbish because it won't be the same and the tray slides open rather than flipping up like with the PS1, and stuff like that. There was no need for change. I wasn't happy but with time I realized that I was being a bit of a fool.

PS. I'm not implying anything, I just know what it feels like. I personally liked Windows 95 and then 98 and XP too. :p

I gave a go on many linux distribution over the ages, let's face it, It is annoying when you are used to windows. If you are after specific use it is recommanded though such as server administration.

Windows 7 is quite excellent after a few tweaks such as grant admin access and remove those pop ups :

-do you want to do this
-do you really want to do this.
-I mean are you really really sure to do this

Yes i want to open notepad.
