Will you lose rankings if you completely change website content?

    Suppose,

You have a blog site that is ranking on first page for a couple of KWs. Now, you completely delete the blog and setup a new vBulletin forum there.

Will you lose the rankings or will the rankings have no affect?

    THE REASON FOR THIS QUESTION:
I am buying a RANKED site which is a blog. My plan is to delete that blog and start a forum in the same niche. The reason why I am buying this site is because it is already ranked. So instead of starting the forum with a new domain and spend loads of money and months on ranking it, I thought about buying an already ranked domain.

Should I go ahead with this? Or is this a stupid idea because rankings will be gone when I delete the blog and install a new vBulletin forum on it?

Yes, you will lose rankings if you completely change code. At least that's what I noticed so far with a couple of sites. Rankings come back eventually, if you can afford that luxury...

Depends what got you those rankings, if you have built links your rankings won't fluctuate much even if you change the content. I've ranked blank pages before so it shows usually content plays a small part in it

Yes, deleting all current website files and installing a forum. "Rankings come back eventually, if you can afford that luxury..." When do they come back? And do I have to do anything special to bring them back?

If you want to maintain those rankings then it would be best to build the forum on a separate page of the website and leave the content pages the way they are.

I did not understand what you said here.

I cannot do that. It would be of no use. What I can do is put the forum in the index and move the current site to a directory that is not accessible to users e.g mysite.com/blog2424

Let me give an example of what I am trying to do (and this example is as close to the site I am talking about as it can get without revealing the site):

This site was created for the purpose of an event/show. Like ungagged.com. Now the site gets ranked good. Now after the ungagged event is finished. This ungagged site will become mostly useless so they remove all the current content from ungagged and put up a forum there related to SEO, IM etc.

This is what I am trying to do.

If you are saying that it should be done like this: ungagged.com/forum. Then this would be useless thing to do (particularly in context of the site I am talking about). So if keeping the content on the site is better then what can be done is move the content to another directory (which future visitors don't know about) like ungagged.com/oldcontent35353 and put the forum in the index (ungagged.com).

If you suggest that the current content should not be deleted, then will it work in this way as I explained?

That site is ranking coz of the content on it and if you delete the content you stand a chance to lose the rankings. If anything you should be looking to add more quality content..

I don't think its ranking because of content. I'm not sure though. The site has ONE page of content. Around 500 words or less. One page of terms and conditions, one page of privacy and one page of contact. That's all the content on the site.

There would be more traffic if you had more pages.

I feel you are going off-topic. My question is simple. Someone is currently using the site as a blog. I want to buy it and delete the blog and start a forum there. Question is, if doing this will hurt the rankings or not?

In this context, the blog is completely irrelevant if forum is introduced. It can be kept if only it is hidden from the visitors.

    I highly agree with that..
OP Without trying out by your own, you cant confirm anything.. Though if it ranks down for such action, some may suggest wrongly.. If you started with that suggestion then looser will be yourself but not the one who suggested you.. Hope you understand..

Install the forum in the directory: domain/forum, redirect the homepage to the forum homepage (to change the way people visit the site, as per your request), but leave all ranking pages with their content on, just with a header that specifies the event is over, and to checkout the forum (link to forum).

You could even just embed the forum feed above the content on the ranking pages to direct visitors more easily.

Yes could yes, though if your links are relevant to your new content, you might regain your lost rankings.
