One of my websites is 6 years old. It always ranked well but was never a real performer because the
content was not a good fit between the audience.

Now, I have the new way more researched and targeted content almost ready for a mid-March re-launch.

But, in the mean-time. I would love to demolish the old site and play around with a blank canvas site until March - i.e. play with minimalist content + Google Adwords etc.

But, while the blog will remain, if the rest of the site is deleted, and minimalist content is put up, will it's ranking drop like a stone?

i would say yes. If you take everything down then you will loose some ranking that you had

I would just recommend leaving it up until you have the new site and content ready to go then put that up.

If you want to play around then set up hosting for another domain name and play around there.

If you have ranking you dont want to loose it.

    Of course it will.
Leave the main site and play on subdomain. Dont affect your main site unless you have 100% workable version to upload.

I agree with CenTex set up hosting for another domain, make sure you no index the site.

Then when you're happy with it and made sure you've set up all the urls right with the new content, then you should be able to just redirect the domain to the new site and take down the old one. Just make sure you back everything up just in case you mess up. And of course set it back to index once its redirected to the new one.

Make it offline or use a subdomain, etc. ( forbid indexing ) and when your new site is ready just load it on your domain.

Host the new site on the server and then just switch the dns when your ready.
