Ok so I stupidly bought a homepage link on fiverr. The guy placed the link in his footer and it subsequently ended up on 1600 pages -- giving me 1600 exact kw anchor links! :/ My exact kw anchor was at 60% (not good!).

I contacted him and he removed it and everyday the links from that site are decreasing (using ahrefs to monitor them).

Exact anchor % is now at 48% and dropping everyday. When all links disappear it should be down to 25%.

Once I get 25% and a panguin update is rolled out do you think my site will reappear in the serps? I had it at #2 in the good old days :(

    Thanks!

Why were you shopping on Fiverr when you already held P2 ?

I remember reading on here about someone who was penalised under similar circumstances. He had dropped a link onto a fairly large wordpress blog with thousands of pages. The problem here was that the blog had a recent comments plugin which showed up on every page, therefore his link and anchor multiplied by the thousands.

I didn't actually think that this would negatively affect a site, and that google only counted one incoming link per url, but it turns out they do. He directed me to a Google forum where it explained the issue. I wish I could find that link now but can't seem to go back far enough in my posts to find it.

Yeah I stupidly bought a link from fiverr ;) Lesson learnt.

But whats the concensus on this then?

My website as far as I know only got hit in April around when the big penguin came along... (link bought a few months before this)

This wasn't your problem. I can guarantee that one bad sitewide link didn't ruin your rankings.

WHat are you doing for backlinks? Are you backlinking internal pages on your domain? What kind of diversity do you have right now for anchor text?

What's your site look like? Most people forget penguin was more than just offsite...

There's a comprehensive run-down of the post-penguin anchor-metrics and how to expand your keyword pool here:

    http://www.backlinkbanzai.com/GooglePenguinPart2.htm

Whether your site regains any of its previous rankings depends on MANY factors now; only time will tell. But keep building highly diverse links via multiple platforms with a solid/careful link-velocity and massive anchor diversity, and you'll give yourself the best chances of recovery. Don't stop link-building!

I think it is impossible to hurt ranking just by posting one link on some website. I'd be too easy to kill competition that way. So, I'd continue working on getting other quality backlinks.
