I am considering going into a long-term venture involving my sole attention and financial backing, but it completely revolves around local search.

Google seems to be slowly converting their local search results to focus totally on AdWords and Google Places / Maps ads. In the coming years, will the "Places" ads of specific local businesses completely take over? If they make the standard search results disappear from the front page, like it seems they are slowly doing, they will ensure that they maintain complete control of these results.

This would make any type of middle-man/directory site useless on a local level, which is what my project is. Bing is already starting to dedicate their local results to Yellowpages, so this concerns me.

    Thoughts?

I'll refer to Bruce Clay here.

The rule of 3's. 3 organics, 3 local & 3 social on the SERPs is his prediction for the future. And of course Adwords. That's about all I know on that subject.

Define your "long term"? IMHO, long term in internet years is a couple of years to maybe 5 years. Do you remember the Alta Vista search engine and there were many others that faded into non-existance. There are some people out there currently saying that YouTube and Social Media are going to be the new search engine, they just don't say when. And then there are governments and other people that are saying that Google is a monopoly and has too much power and should be broken up like AT&T.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket, be flexible and stay current with trends, but don't get caught up being a trend setter. Remember the Apple Newton, the Palm Pilot and the list goes on.

    That's my 2 cents worth.

Yeah if you live in a small country or area local search is near good as a country wide search as it will show up business that are on end of the country to the other

Google is a small part of offline if you know what offline really is.I do work for restaurants and the first thing I do is create a webapp for the site.Having a bookmark on the homepage of a phone bypasses search engines, they would not install the app otherwise.Use flyers etc.I see search engines losing local searches as time goes on.The technology is there for anyone to create an app linked to a mobile site or real app.
I also have an offline business,I rank #1 on google and bing but I always use other methods.Google has put a load of directories on the first page since the update so people now have to go to a directory then click on various sites from there, yeah good user experience..NOT.
The first page of a local search should only have real business sites no directories, this is another reason local search will become less SE based.I'd suggest you make the site an app.If I look for a restaurant now I have places, the organic results are mostly directories now, very user unfriendly. It's clearly aimed at getting these businesses to do adwords.
I give clients free £50 adwords vouchers(I buy a web design mag, they are always in there) and tell them to use the free £50 and stop.Google wants to play games, let's play. They have no idea how local businesses think,so I hope they keep screwing up the results because it puts people off and opens alot more new doors of opportunity to people with a bit of imagination to bypass a search engine altogether.
People don't like google anyway because they are just too big, trying to ge their fingers in pies like social, thing is they do not have a social mindset, facebook was genuinely set up for what it is,google +1 is set up to glean user info.Search results are crap,G+1 rammed down searchers throats.
The new algo will make it easier to get people to install your apps, the results are poor, google has let itself down so utilise this weakness.
