Well seeing as it's a UK url, it would do much better in the UK. Or so I believe anyways. Normally it should get more traffic around the UK area.

Backlinks from local sites have helped me rank faster than I would otherwise, so yeah I think it'll help.

I don't have experience with .co.uk, but I know about .fr and I think it's similar

country specific links will definitely help, but only to a certain extend. They won't be enough to beat wikipedia like sites for example.

At one point of time, it's more effective to look at the backlinks of your competitors and try to match them. Most likely, they will have few country specific link. It can also give you and idea of how many country links you need.

Yes, local links will help more to rank in local google site than .com links.

But more important is, pagerank and authority of the page where you get backlink.

yes definitely, also what forlearnx said, you can specify target country in google webmaster tools. When specific to uk also try adding address on each page and a google map if possible, although this can be difficult with blackhat

I think it's mainly important that your own domain is .co.uk. I've ranked multiple .co.uk sites with us/worldwide links only.

Like they said, if you have a .co.uk domain hosted in the UK, getting links from local domains will definately help to rank higher.
