Like I felt the url might be overoptimize and decide to tweak it a bit.
    Will the links be lost?

The links will not be lost, they will still be there. You would need to optimize your new URL. but why dont you just edit the links you built to other inner pages rather than changing URL?

im always afraid to change structural urls if the page is in top 10 already. usually it doesnt come back in my case.

wordpress creates 301 automatically if u change post/pages urls and thats supposed to pass most linkjuice, but i think google doesnt like content removing and structural changes/redirects too much. maybe it partly hits their anti pbn/redirect algo.

yes. Those backlinks are lost. Has happened with me. I ordered some services from market for PBN and then had to change something in the post tile in wordpress and I changed the permalink too. It was in top 20 and then wasn't in top 100 after the change. It took me a while to realize what happened. Worst case scenario, if you must change the URL structure, atleast 301 old page to new one.
