So I found a domain that has a popular movie name in it. The niche is totally different and has nothing to do with the movie. I just want to add a word before or after the movie domain... is this safe?

The laws are different all over the world... but... I've seen unrelated movies with the same titles http://www.imdb.com/list/ls000397020/

different songs with the same title: http://www.vh1.com/news/25138/hit-songs-with-the-same-title/

If you use someone else's brand you can get in trouble... The Band "Tad" used Pepsi's logo as their album cover art and they were successfully sued. I now call Pepsis "Tads" in silent protest. :)

McDonald's has successfully and unsuccessfully sued businesses for using the same name.

So if the word is a brand or trademark you could get sued. If it is a word like "Jump" then you might be ok.

If my new domain is TitanicfoodPlace.com (made up) will I get in trouble for having Titanic in it?

I doubt it. The Movie stole the name from the boat that sank. Plus the band "Titanic Love Affair" stole the name before the movie did... plus titanic is an English word meaning "of exceptional strength, size, or power." You can't trademark english words... You could trademark "Titanic the movie" or "The Titanic Flower Shop" but a trademark application for just the word "titanic" should be rejected... Where you would get in trouble is if someone else already trademarked "Titanic Food" or "Titanic Place"... but if no one has... :)

Well in that case, could you get in trouble for using exact name of product with .com/net/org? I'm sure many ppl here use that for their amazon affiliate sites..

I see people using brand names of big companies all the time but they add a word in the beginning or end that has nothing to do with the brand,,, so I guess its fine

I would stay away from them if you have long term interests in mind.

You have to remember this is all civil... the police don't come arrest you or anything. When a person or corporation feels like their identity is being usurped for financial gain they have the ability to sue and in the United States the trademark is used determine who owns the rights.

Oh I thought this was OK, but you¨re probably right. The only thing that made me thought this is OK, was that I saw so many fan pages using actors name and ranking first spot... + the same with amazon affiliate sites. So you would recoment different name + vcc fot these kind of domains? If I buy domain from different name with vcc, but I buy hosting with my name, because I have a great deal with local company, could this get me in trouble? ( will they find me via hosting info?) Btw: I'm from europe.

Beware taking "legal advice" from strangers on an SEO forum. My 2 cents...

On common words like Apple (It can only be trademarked in terms of computers, etc) because it's not a common word for computers.

But it can't be trademarked for "Food"

But apple, has filed trade marks for "Apple Pay" "Apple Watch" - because they have to, "Apple" just can't own everything with the world apple in it.

If you started a clothing line called "Apple" - I don't think there is anything "Apple the computer company" can do about it.

Ok ok, thanks for info. So if you use about-apple-watch dot com, or applewatchreview dot com you should be ok, right?

Stay away from this type of domain names. Why risk getting into trouble for just a dab of success or popularity? In the long run, it can cause you a lot of trouble....

I think this will convince you, why you don't use micro data that is schema tags.

An example if we put tag like any film name for example avatar.

If user searches about avatar film your site will display for some reasons like your site as graphic designing site it will display.

Try it will be useful to you rather than setting names on domain..
