I think it will hurt the market as many computer manufactures will start using google os then Microsoft and not have to pay for it so it will benefit us in the long run as we will get a lowered price computer

Don't be so sure... I really think this OS is going to give microsoft a run for its money, especially if it's free. Free + Open Source + Very simple (the reason people started using google in the first place) = win imo.

I could care less if it never gets to 5% market share, if its simple like chrome, ill be using it... And Google will use it internally so it wont die.

Linux has always been free + open source. Look at Ubuntu. An awesome good looking and simple to use OS. Did it have any effect on microsoft? no. Neither will chrome OS.

Its just linux with their own desktop environment, which doesn't mean much. What it will boil down to is the same compatability issues that all other flavors of linux have when trying to run windows programs. Most people will hate it.

As i have said before though. it will be interesting to see google's linux distro. just don't count on it being the windows killer or anything close.

As much as I love linux its just not my favorite desktop environment. Server, yes. My main desktop will be running Windows 7. Now theres something worth running on your desktop.

Unless Chrome can run windows apps as easily as windows does, it will be just another os. The key to windows isn't there OS. I think most geeks would agree that linux blow microsoft away as just as OS. So why hasn't linux over taken Microsft? The applicatrions. yes all those programs which you invested so much money and time learning. You want to go out and buy all new programs? I don't think so.

yeah thats pretty much it. dont get me wrong I would love for some linux distro to become widespread for end users but its just not going to happen. at one point i was using ubuntu as my main dektop for months. It was awesome in a lot of ways but in the end it just wasn't worth the incompatability. Sure theres WINE but most programs wont work with it at all and most of the ones that do take so much hardcore configuration and ghetto rigging and then they usually dont even work like they should.

of course theres always things like vmware but end users arent going to go through all that crap. especially since they will need a windows license anyway so whats the point.

Yeh sounds like I need to hire people to write malware, adware, spyware, virus for the google OS so I can be the first on the market :D
    j/k

Google OS > Windoss? I doubt it. Everyone is schooled in windows; it's like teaching an old dog new tricks; we've just gotten used to the windows machine and does google have the "investment" required to get this out to every library, school or whatever to start using it? People need an incentive to move to something new and different...takes time for people to be "trained" in this new area. I think most of us don't prefer to crawl again after we know how to walk.

I think that it will grab a market share in the "super cheap computer" market if they give it away for free like I think they are. Will it be a real threat to Micro$oft? seriously doubt it - people are creatures of habit.

The only market share google would dent is Ubuntu's thus only having an impact on the linux market share. Lets face it for someone not knowing anything about computers using a OS backed by linux is completely different than opening a web browser.

Yeah this is pure fluff.. I think it's pretty established the positions of today and would take a very sophisticated app to hurt the top players.. An OS is an OS and for many people it's as simple as that. Things shouldn't get more complicated than they actually are since most people are looking for ease of use..

Anyways chrome owns an average 2% market share. This might be a netbook product if any.

The Mac OS hasn't hurt Win at all, and it's much better supported than linux.
    This is a non-event.

linux would be the top winner, but since it's free there's no support or development!
without a major software company behind it, linux is nothing but a 3rd choice.
it's better than win in some ways, but being better doesn't mean you're the top... :(
