I was working on my keyword density for my site and in order to reduce it, I used a synonym. Example : Instead of the keywords "women shoes for your head", I used the word "female shoes for your head". But I have the keyword "women shoes for your head" in the title and the url.

Basically my question is if it is ok to change the keyword as I did but leave the exact keyword in the title and url?

Yes variation is good, diversification is "always" important.

Using too much of the same keyword might sometimes even have negative effects hence using different similar keywords is actually considered good in the long run.

As posted above, you should use a lot of variation. There really is no exact percent, but depending on how grey hat you want to be with backlinking, some people suggest the perfect percent for main keyword is under 10% (this could change with a new G algo update, and remember I said depending on what hat you want to wear. There will be some black hats that disagree and some white hats that disagree too).

Throw some naked URL links, some "click here" "website" "site" links, and some website title links in there. Use a LOT of keyword variation.

As everyone has said, make sure to diversify your anchor text profile.
Generic, LSI, naked, and main keywords.
I make sure to keep my main KWs just below 10% each, naked can be a bit higher (I often stick to a minimum of15%, but there are slight variations you can make on this and to have it around 30% wouldn't be the worst thing in the world) and the rest are variations, secondary KWs, generic, etc...
You will DEFINITELY be penalized for an "over-optimized" (aka poorly optimized) anchor text profile.
