Will Google attempt to find sitemap.xml if you don't submit it?

As title says. If I don't register my website in Google search console and submit a sitemap will Google look for /sitemap.xml? Or can I link to it from my homepage or robots file?

I think they will normally do this whether you submit a sitemap or not.

I did in the past get a site indexed without submitting any sitemaps

I do not know but it is per better if you submit on google search console. It is very easy and if you own site and have access, very easily you can verify as well.

You could in the past. But now Google wants us to submit the sitemap to crawl and index. Simply do that as much as sites you have. Better way.

best practice is to include it in your robots.txt file. many say do not submit your blackhat site or tier 1s to GSC; this does not mean that you should not have a robots.txt with sitemap url in it.

You'll be fine without submitting it, just make sure to have it in the files.

You would be surprised how many websites, including some large and authoritative ones, never ever open the Google Search Console and don't know what the sitemap is.

Submitting is just a way to help Google and speed things up.

You can specify in robots.txt.

But Google will not try to find sitemap as it can have any name. Google is not going to waste its resources.
