I've seen a rise in the site's position without a single backlink after I started buying advertisements on Google. But the increase was insignificant.

The traffic received through ads may change the positions a little bit and the rank will increase because of the constant, good quality & niched traffic, and not because of Adwords.

Tested with adult site, didn't help in ranking, the campaign runs for one month I think.

The traffic that these paid ads brings definitely helps your ranking positively especially if the bounce rate is very low and there are conversions.

Not sure these days. But back in 2009 when we were running Adwords for a finance site in UK, our SEO rankings went up. We were like 100+ on most of the keywords and in like 2-3 weeks of running daily Ads we were in top 20. Not sure how it worked, but it helped. Although you wont read about it in Google posts, but whoever is running consistent GA Ads knows about it. Again I'm not sure about present times, better run ads with small daily cap for like 3-4 weeks to see the results.
