Just wondering, my site is ranking on first page for a good keyword I've been trying to rank for some time now...BUT my content isn't converting as well as I would like it too.

If I change my content(I have some good ideas) will this damage my rankings in anyway? I'm making a sale or two but I know from a previous site I owned it can make a lot more...

    Cheers

If the new content is still optimized just as well and includes the same amount, if not more, of content then your rankings should be back on the first page.

I wanted to do the same one day, for one keywords I have lost 17 place (12 > 29) by adding 500 words to make a better post :/ maybe if you change the content and add new strong link you can stay, each situation is different but take care mate if you do this, you take a risk

it depend's .. if you focus on the main keywords of your website, then it shouldn't be an issue, but keep in mind some listings in the ranking will possibly change.

It won't effect if the new content is unique and really of high quality!
Still I would recommend you to change your content in small parts day by day [ Just to be safe :)]

    Hope that helped

    Cheers

Yes, don't change the whole article, just update i part by part. Google loves frequently updated content and may give you a boost. Good luck!

I agree with Honey here. I would not change a bunch of it all at the same time. Slow might be best in this case.

this makes sense to me. however, i wonder how google detects changes in articles?
my experience is when i post a new article on my wordpress site, crawl rate increases, then it comes down.
subsequent changes to contents of posts do not show (at least not very quickly) increase of crawl rate.

how does google know that you have a slight change in your article contents? every time i edit a post and click on 'update' in my wordpress post, google will notice? or do i have to ping someone? or use google addURL?

if google is that sensitive, then there should be a plugin called wordpress 'automatic post update' that could be useful?

So much misleading information offered here. Changing content may boost, lose or remain rankings - nobody can tell exactly. Just think a little. You will make new structure for your page which may affect linking structure (in and out - lose or gain linkjuice) and content structure (new content, new image/video placements depending how you want to present the content, new heading structures - depending what you really want to change). And it really doesn´t matter if you make the changes in small parts (like HoneyHelper suggested) or you gonna do it at once. Just do it and see.

    Cheers

Mmmmm thanks for all the advice people. I think I will just do it, but make slow changes as suggested.

Will update and let you all know how I go so everyone knows in future..
Current ranking for main keyword - 8(was 7 but jumps from 6-9 all the time)
My second keyword - (Also at 8(jumps from 15-7))

Lets do this! I will make a back up actually then if it goes to shit will change back, hope this has an increase conversions and rankings..

I don't think so. I applied this method randomly on my site. I see, my content didn't lose ranking. So you can change it confidently. Every month i reserve full 2 days for changing my content. You said, you want to change it for getting higher CTR. That's why i am writing. Not thinking that, if you will change full content, you will lose your ranking. I just mentioned content update. You can add or remove some content, you can change some content model or structure. I think, you will stay in the same position, if you will see you are decreasing, just again update your content, i think, this problem is very rare. :)

Lol, you are making a bid deal of a small problem.

First : If you have really few backlinks then you are ranking because of content. All you need to worry about is keyword density.

Second : Why is it a small problem ? because over optimization penalty has no memory. Like, every time google visits you article it will update your ranking according to the changes. So, in worst case scenario, you can paste the old article again to get the previous ranking.

However, If you take care of keyword density, you might even see better ranks. I don't know how people don't change their articles anyway !

New content is never bad for a website. As long as the change is natural you should be fine.
