Hey guys. Got a question . I got a client that wants to move from his slow hosting and he wants me to re-design his wp-based site. But he is worried that his pr2 site might get hurt. He is currently on #2 position for the main keyword. Is it safe to re-design if I keep the same content just change layout and font size etc ?

PR2 is NOTHING to brag about. If the new host is faster then it will likely increase his PR rather than drop it. Also, depending on how you code, that could effect it as well. Speed is a factor in SEO so the way your theme is optimized DOES matter. Let me know if you need a designer for the WP theme.

Both changing design and hosting can sometimes affect the ranking (not necessarily negatively, but you never know...) However, if the new host is faster, and if your code is clean and optimized, it may help to inscrease the rankings (as ExecutiveCloser said, these are SEO factors)

But the PR won't be affected, as it is based primarily on backlinks (i.e. off-site factors). Nothing on-site can affect the PR.

Wouldn't worry about your PR, but might effect your rankings unless you ensure the on-page optimisation is carried over correctly. Just make sure you 301 the interior pages over and remove and h1/2/3 tags that the new template might have (many carts and cms have auto generate page titles in h1/2 etc ...)

    Not true.

If you will design site with a complicated and really deep linking , link juice can be shared among many pages and it might drop. Keep the juice in the jar ( on main page )

This is a myth. PR is actually transmitted through links, but "sharing" it doesn't mean loosing it.

I am going to use some premium theme, cache it and host him on my vps because rightnow he is on 'yahoo sitebuilder' deal. Self made website with quite a few links to other 'friends' websites and directories. His site loads really slow and when I logged in to his wordpress it wouldn't even update because wp 3 required mysql 5 and his hosting has 4. I didn't think it would hurt to move it but he showed concern and I thought I double check with experts here :) Thank you for all who confirmed.

Just to be clear. A PR3 can be obtained with a single PR5 backlink (I have created 50+ PR3 domains with 1 backlink to them, though it's not an exact science it will get PR3 vs PR2)

These sites have generally 2-3 pages of content and free themes.
I have also, when more aggressive, made sites with 2-3 pages of content PR4 and 1-2 are now PR5 (blog networks I worked on building up)

So yes, PR won't change... seemingly it's 100% about what links into it.
