I have a site in the financial services sector which does very well in G. It basically has one product; for the purposes of this, let's say it is "vehicle insurance". It would have:
    Young persons car insurance
    Van insurance
    New driver car insurance
    Cheap car insurance
    Under 20 car insurance

A few variations but the fact is, it has just one product and that concerns me so I am l looking to add others but I don't want to affect my current rankings.

    I am worried that just adding categories for say, Home insurance, will dilute my site's authority in G for its current product suite (its well on the way to becoming an authority for its niche) so I am thinking that a sub domain will do a better job, say;

    homeinsurance.moneysite.com

I have never used sub domains before apart from spamming them on some of my older sites and I don't want to start a new site as my moneysite here has almost 200 pages.

Has anyone had experience of doing this and seeing their main site maintain their ranking position?

It will not hurt you one bit and would even add to the authority of the main site. We both have some of the same niches, as you know, and I do that now with some of my sites and I interlink a little here and there from one to the other.

You'll be past safe, you'll be graduating to a higher level of authority once you build out your subdomains.

Adding a subdomain will not dilute the authority of the root domain. There are many successful sites that do this. Check out gumtree.

Using subdomains or just /directory/ is mostly the same from an SEO point. But from marketing point is different. A subdomain can be useful to separate out content that is completely different. Google uses subdomains for distinct products such as news.google.com or maps.google.com, for example.

Let's say your main site is an online shop for bags, but you want to launch a blog for shoes on the same domain - in this case it will be better if you use a subdomain.

If you use subdomian properly then it will not hurt your site rankings. Google changed the way it handles sub domains last year, with links from subdomains now being classified as internal links. Moz's panel also agreed that a keyword appearing in the subdomain boosts rank.

Based on what I have seen, subdomains shouldn't hurt you at all. I have websites running on subdomains and they still rank fine.

Thanks to everyone. I guess I know deep down that a sub-domain shouldn't hurt my rankings but this game makes you paranoid and I am usually a big believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I must diversify my product range on this site. Luckily, it is a brand+finance generic keyword so it wouldn't look odd to add another domain to it.
Always good to get other people's real life knowledge on a subject, not just theory.

Subdomains are a good way to give your website a new sub niche.
