Forgive me for whats probably a stupid question, but i've managed to rank 2 sites in top 5 page rank in google for decently comptetitive keywords, my question is over some weeks/months/years if I leave the sites alone without updating content will the PR begin to fall? Is there some amount of 'maintenance' i need to put in to the sites every so often or can I just leave them alone and they'll stay put? Thanks

Do you mean you have 2 sites with PR5 or below or do you mean you have two sites ranked in the top 5 spots of SERP's?

Well when it comes to SEO, generally you will always want to do some sort of monthly activities for your site such as adding content to your website/blog as well as building quality backlinks and getting social signals. It's never a good idea to really stop everything cold turkey! Plus, you also got to realize that when your at the top, everyone is shooting to steal your spot :)

Well pr is based on the authority of the links pointing to the url, so if over time you keep exactly the same backlinks, or even acquire more the page rank should stay. However, Google could change the thresholds for specific pr levels or even downgrade certain links so nothing is really certain.

If you don't do any more backlinking to the sites, the PR will drop too eventually. I had sites that I stopped working on going from PR3 to PR1 in a couple of months. So yes, PR will drop too. But PR is just a number, the only thing that really matters is the Google ranking.

To keep up with your search result ranking and to improve it you need to do link building consistently. If you left it doing nothing, then you'll fall down in SERP.

It depends on how tough your competition is. If there is no updated on competitors then you should be safe.
