Sometimes when I'm visiting wikipedia.org, I accidentally type in wikpedia.COM. For the past week or so, I've noticed that wikipedia.COM was redirecting to a email/zip submit offer.

As of today, it's now redirecting to wikipedia.ORG, but I was just wondering what was up. Did someone change the redirect for the .COM? Or do you think that the real site accidentally let it expire and someone started redirecting all that traffic.

All I know is that with as popular as that site is, whoever was redirecting to their affiliate link was probably making a killing off of that stupid little zip submit. And I actually don't see why they didn't make their squeeze page look more official. Maybe iframe the actual site and have a "top banner" that says - "we're giving away a free ipod".

They probably let it expire or something and someone else bought it up.
Then they sent them a nice cease and desist, and got the rights back.

It actually reminds me of the whole thing going on with modernwarware3dotcom sending visitors to battlefield3. Hilarious stuff.

Too bad it tends to get lawyers and such involved these days.
Never fun when you get a very unfriendly letter in the mail.

sounds like malware. Do you really think they would allow the domain to expire?
