I just stumbled across a site about a project to allow people to "print" and build a house within a day.

the idea is cool, but i only see this being a benefit to the third world. i don't think i would personally buy a house that i knew was built by some dude with a little ambition and time on his hands. building codes exist for a reason. but the idea is awesome.

As the community grows there will be buildings that meet building codes as well as different designs. And its not about doing it quickly or having no ambition its about affordable housing.

Wouldn't you rather have a house for $20,000 that is same quality as a $20,000 house and built in a fraction of the time.

It would take a while for the community to be able to do that. Building a cheap house from the ground up is one thing. Building it safely for the future residents is another.

building codes are constantly changing, and differ from state to state, and even by county (I'm in the US). Plus having the entire process permitted by local government, and inspected as the project progresses would take a lot longer than just a few days or weeks.

if its a brand new build site you will also need to run utilities to the place, which by itself is going to run close to, if not more, than $20k.

Like I said, great idea for the people in the third world needing shelter, but I can't see this as a viable option in my country. Well, maybe for a garage or a tool shed, but not some place people are going to dwell

The reason why plumbing and electrical costs are so high is because of the unions getting laws past to make it hard to become a plumber or electrician, and in many states you can't even do it on your own without a license. And in some states it can take 5 years to get a license or 8,000 hours of experience. A month watching youtube nowadays can get you enough knowledge to do your own plumbing, so the requirements need to be dropped.

I would really like an explanation of how the unions have done what you are claiming.

If I want to build my own house I can. I do not have to consult with any union to build my house. You are right about the value of YouTube. I've learned a lot of shit there, and will continue to do so. What I am talking about it getting building permits, and making my electrical, plumbing, and any other construction up to a standard that will pass the inspection.

For example, if I want any kind of home owners insurance, the house will have to be inspected by a building inspector. It doesn't matter who installed what, all that matters is how it was installed. He will sure as shit shut your stuff down if he deems it unsafe. He can even get the local government involved and condemn the place.

Everything involved in the home building business involves safety inspection. There really isn't a way to get around it. Well I guess if you want a una-bomber type shed in the woods that is off the grid.

Again, I want to make clear that I support the idea, but there are several hurdles to jump through before it has a chance of making it available to everyone.

It's a pretty cool idea. Maybe making use of technology to try and eradicate some of the poverty / living conditions out there.

I was talking about how the unions made the local govt pass laws to where only licensed plumbers can do work and it takes 5 years to get a license

seem like a nice idea. wont see how this differ much from houses in the US in average, except of course the plumbing etc.
Other than that come on sheetrock, plywood.... sounds just like material you would use on your own when doing some simple stuff. Long way to go to get this mainstream but shows you what this simple builds are really worth.
