the keyword gets a good amount of monthly searches (12,000). Google says CPC is only .05. I always hear that when doing keyword research you should look to get a keyword that has a CPC of at least a dollar, why? Doesn't that just mean more competition?

This is a .com I have, I should be able to get some good traffic there once the site is up and rank in a top 3 position after not too long right? My url is the entire keyword. Yeah I know this sounds pretty noob, please don't tell me to read more; I will keep reading and reading but I would i really like this to be answered. Any ebook suggestions for me? It's hard to filter through all the junk out there.

When it says .05 cents in the tool, it's not always accurate. Try bidding 5 cents on adwords wth it and see if it asks for more to be on first page.

Think to yourself. Do you really think the only difference between a high paying keyword and a low paying keyword is the competition? What else could it possibly mean?

imo 5 cents 12k traffic will lead you to frustration. 450 (best case scenario) hits per day if your in 1st place and 1% ctr =4.5 hits = 25 cents per day. i suck at math so someone correct me, and that is after a lot of time and money to get to spot one.

unless you have a specific upsell i would let that site go or park it. a million per month is maybe worth considering.

Im pretty sure your math is correct, and thats a BEST case scenario, giving him top dollar per click, and top traffic possible.

Yes exactly. 1 high paying click can equal your entire months earnings easily. You have more options to drive traffic to your site. You have more options for high paying affiliate links in addition to adsense.

If you are only making a few pennies per click, you cant look into purchasing targeted banner ads or something, because you have no chance of making your money back. But with a high paying keyword, you have more options, and a higher possibility of more money.
