on one of my sites, i have 30 or so long tail keywords I'm targeting, all basically some variation of the main keyword. I'm running an almost EMD. All of my pages are indexed and webmaster tools shows three of my main keywords as the most relevant keywords on my site. Why then, would i rank only for some of my long tails and none of the main keywords even show up in the top 1000? I've done my kw research and I would have expected the main keywords to at least show in the serps.

Anyone experience this before or have any ideas why this may be?

I've had a similar experience. Made a few new sites recently and although I'm getting good long tail traffic, I'm not ranking for my main keywords. It's like google is identifying the most relevant keyword for my page, then intentionally not ranking me for it. It's not an over optimisation penalty. I'm thinking it's just a trust thing with new sites?

Long tails have always been easier for me to rank.

this is a new site (6-8 weeks), that i'm testing.. Only doing some pinging, scrapebox rapid indexing, and a small scrapebox blast using names rather than keywords as anchors. did a senuke cycle yesterday and going to add some manual 2.0's this week.

Is your content "better" than what your competition is using? Who is your competition for those keywords? How strong is your site in general when it comes to authority? Do you have anyone linking to those pages to let google know "Hey, this keyword is relevant".

It takes time, links, content, and correct SEO to rank well. Generally speaking, long tail is very easy to get relative to competitive short tail.

I have the same experience as the op. Long tails is giving me some traffic. But my main kw which is my domain is not in the top 100. I created a post using my main kw and now it's indexed and rank for 15 spot. I don't know why google doesn't rank my homepage as my main URL..
