    Right then...

For the past week I have been trying to get to the number 1 spot for a fairly non competitive KW. I am currently ranking at 13 somedays and 12 other days.

My site is a .org (with exact keyword in domain) with around 200 backlinks from High PR profiles, homepage links from about 5 of my other sites, blog comments (around 50/50 spammed and unspammed pages), web 2.0 bombarded with sb blasts and around 10 articles.
My keyword density is 3.7% and I have 10 pages. I have ran it through traffic travis and got an A rating

    Now heres whats strange.

The site that is ranking number 1 has:
    16 backlinks (all articles)
    keyword density of 9%
Page title which is just the keyword repeated 3 times
    Keyword in url
    .net domain

All of which goes against everything I know about SEO

The site is how old? One week isn't always sufficient time to get ranked number one. Build some trust with G. It will get there. Just give it some time.

    Some ideas...

    1) 1 week isn't really long enough to see a change
    2) domain age? trust? trusted backlinks? (.edu etc)
    3) too many links too quickly
    4) relevant links from other high ranking sites in your niche?
    5) traffic travis don't mean shit
    6) random chance
    7) link juice redirected through 301s which you can't see

The first rule of SEO is that you know nothing about SEO. The shit is as random as the universe itself sometimes. I would say if you did some more articles and got links from them like that, then backlinked all your backlinks (especially your articles) you would outrank him. Remember he may only have a few links but how many links do his links have? There is so much more to it, you need to continue to study and practice SEO till you get it right. Good luck!

You have to wait a while, you know how slow Google is at these things.

Could definitely be a 301 passing a shit load of link juice through. I have a site which is ranking well for several competitive keywords, and only shows 100 external backlinks in site explorer, because I have a 301 from my old domain.

thanks for the info guys. I have just checked his backlinks to see if there is any links pointing towards them and there are non.
Domain age is: 1 Years, 8 Months, 7 days.

Is there a way to findout if there is a 301 redirect?

I didnt think that the site would do so well because of the KW stuffing. Guess only time will tell...

Scrape backlink sources of your competitors on page one with
Market Samurai or Scrapebox or whatever. Try to get as many
links from the same sites as you can.

There is a free software called Link Hopper that can analyse redirects.
    Just Google it.

Use Xenu or OpenSiteExplorer. The latter software is free!
