Everyone says that content is king, especially fresh content. But, there are certain types of sites where the content does not have to change. The content sort of is what it is and they still rank well. So, why all the emphasis on fresh content?

Google likes sites that are actively posting new and updated content. Better new than old.

Im going to go out on a limb here and expect some argument, but i have tested this in my limited capacity, and dont think fresh content is the actual deciding factor.
Sure newer content may have more relevance in certain instances, say sports team news, but not for a lot of other things.

The web nowadays is extremely dynamic, with rss, auto ping, millions of aggregation and similar sites etc. Similarly social media has removed the obvious negative of short lived links - people change statuses etc all the time.
So new content will actually generate many unindexed (hence un-noticed by site owners but noticed by spiders) and often short lived backlinks.

Equally older but still relevant content will gain similar backlinks by social media and traditional references.

Tl,dr: Backlinks are still the key component of SE algorithms - try keeping a steady stream of diverse backlinks (even really low level, often un-index ones like twitter spam and comments) pointing at your older content.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
