Let's suppose that according to Google suggestion tool, a keyword has 10,000 US searches/ day.
In your opinion, why the actual number of US visitors is much less than that even for the #1 position?

    1) what google shows is NEVER an exact number
    2) are you sure that its 10 000 searches a Day or Month?
    3) Did you try [exact] and "Phrase" search? Broad search is what it says - broad, and never accurate : ))

    Hope this helps...

Not only that, you are never going to get everyone that searches that term to click through to your site.

Additinally, the exact data is worth billions. Also they state that the data posted is at least couple of months old. Finally, the information is actually offered to adwords users and is designed to show the worst case / most expensive scenario.

    US monthly [exact] searches.

What do you about the "fake" searches that every webmaster makes when looking for the position of his website ?

For example if 1000 people eveyday search in google the position of their website for a keyword [dog training] without clicking on the SERPs, is this raising the number of searches for that keyword in your opinion ?

The number of searches and number of clicks is two different things...

Normally the number of clicks (for the G #1 site) is 30-70% of the number of searches, but most often about 40%... (#2 around 13-17%;#3 7-8% etc...)

In your case if searches (daily/monthly) is 10K for a keyword, the site #1 should get between 3K and 7K (30-70%)... but realistically around 4K...

    Does it now make sense?

google doesn't want you to have exact information :)

And the results about searches are very variable. You should check the keyword searches with google trends too, because some keywords are periodical, (only in summer or winter, or major events) and u don't need those.

should also consider the trend, many keywords have high/low seasons
