Back in 1933 because of the great depression the President had all gold coins ordered to be turned in and exchanged for paper money, and also made it illegal to hoard gold.

For nearly the past 80 years, the Secret Service has been investigating the coins that were not turned in.

They never said how much money the secret service has spent, but its probably in the millions.

High? Ha! Try paying 55% or more that Germany and other European countries have... on top of gas prices 3-4* the U.S.

Quit bitching about taxes. Go to other countries where you don't get the same luxuries as you do for your taxes. Nice roads. Timely police, ambulance, and fire department responses. You don't have to live in a fortress with bars on your windows, electric and razor wire around your house, and 20 ft concrete walls around the perimeter.

Go to the store. Look at how cheap the prices are. Now imagine you go to other countries where they pay 2-3x what you're paying.

So yah, STFU about paying taxes. You earned the money. Now pay what you owe. Or you can always just leave if you don't like it.

But America is more designed around cars then Europe is,so people in the U.S. have to drive more and the cars are about 44% less efficient here on average then in Europe.

Are there any good tax deductions and credits in Germany?

There is nothing wrong with taxes, but if they are too high because of wasteful spending then its a problem. The police, fire, emt's,and roads are funded from a different taxes not from income tax.

You do understand the dysfunctional dichotomy in that statement right? If you earned it how do you owe it to anyone else? Stupidest yet most accepted comment the masses ever ingested.

Or you could do what our fore fathers did in this country every time they saw idiocy happening, you can fight to change it... You know silly stuff like, taxation without representation, slavery, Jim Crow laws, those things; or should they have simply left if they didn't like it?

If your in the nanny state mentality I doubt you'll go far in life...

Lets assume the investigative costs were equal to 100 million. Care to explain how this kind of "pocket change" would affect taxes?

    Nicely stated.

I bet there are a shit load of American's that are losing their homes and cannot feed there children or afford to take them to the hospital that would GLADLY pay American taxes.

Instead of bitching about paying taxes, why not be GRATEFUL that you have the health, and knowledge to make the money to have to pay taxes.

Max tax in Germnay is 45%, provided you earn around 250k a year (and I doubt the general public is even approaching those kinds of figures). In return (unlike with the US) you get free or close to free education, a proper health service and other benefits.

Gas prices are indeed high, however Europe is far less car dependent in comparison to the US because of fairly well developed public infrastructure.

Its just an example of wasteful government spending, and $100 million doesn't seem much but when you add up the thousands of other wasteful programs and multiple agencies that do the same thing,it will be much higher.

@makingfastcash22 high taxes have caused about $1 trillion to not be spent in the United States.

What's even more ridiculous is that almost 50% of income earners in the US don't pay federal income tax. How ridiculous is it when almost half the people that get to vote don't have a vested interest in how the money is spent.

We may not have as high as a tax burden as other countries but when you add up all of the taxes besides income tax that we get hit with it's ridiculous. Look at your phone bill or your cable bill for example. All the BS taxes, surcharges and fees.

When I used to have a brick and mortar business the state would nickle and dime me to death. When they didn't feel it was enough they would come up with a new regulation to charge me for something else.

There should be a flat tax or consumption tax and nothing else.

You see, you and your government have a little agreement. You want to be taken care of (and they're willing to do that), but somebody has to pay for that. Naturally, since you want to be taken care of, then you should have to pay your share for those services. Makes perfect sense, right?

So how do you propose that those government services are paid for? I'm sure you enjoy nice roads, nice schools, good emergency response, good protection, cheap prices, and good security, right?

Go visit another country for 3 months. Another country that doesn't have these things. You will be singing a different tune. Taxes are a good thing. They let you pay 1/2 of what other people in other countries have to pay. They let you feel safe as you sit in front of your computer (without feeling that somebody is going to steal your computer). You call 911, and you know that somebody will be at your house shortly.

You take for granted all these things that taxes pay for. You spew your rhetoric, yet your response indicates that you haven't really lived. You sound young and inexperienced in life. Get out into the world. See what your taxes are actually providing for you. You will sing a different song after you done this.

Yeah, I see where you are coming from mate. I just felt like the title of your post somewhat misrepresented as well as oversimplified the whole tax issue. Pointing out this specific story as "the reason for tax jumps" is a little bit of a red herring... Have a look at this chart http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6a/Federal_spendings.png obviously the defense budget is the big, pink, elephant in the room. Compare that to the DoJ budget...

@scubasteve You are missing the point... We are talking about wasteful governmental expenditure, instead of "good taxes"... The department of homeland security, sadly, does not build roads...

Members of Congress try to push the defense budget as high as possible. A few years ago they were pushing more f-22's to be bought by the Pentagon, but the Pentagon didn't want them, because they had enough and it cost too much. It just so happens that the Head of the armed services committee gets a lot of campaign donations from companies that make things for the military. I wouldn't be surprised if he also purchased a lot of stocks in those companies.
