Why should a competitor link to your website?

Hello,

I was reading guide about how to build backlinks.

Well in the guide has been written :

''Try to send an e-mail to your best ranking competitors, asking them to add a link to your website''

I was wondering how can be possible competitors link to my website? I am a competitor for them, why should they be intersted to link to me?

Ok, but I am a competitor for them, I am not big enough (my backlink to them has no SEO power) , so why should they give others the power to outrank them?

If I was a Miami pet shop website owner, I would gladly link to your New York pet shop website, for instance. Still, we are competitors, so to say, except not in the same town.
