Why SEO providers sell services instead of ranking their own websites: The truth

Just feel like writing something so I thought I would answer a question that gets asked a lot on black hat world. A lot of people look at the services provided here and think to themselves (Or sometimes post here) why are these service providers selling these services like MNS website to earn x,xxx / month or SEO packages or EBOOKs or anything like that, instead of just building the site for themselves / ranking the site for themselves and earning x,xxx / month for themselves?

I can tell you the answer to this question and it is based on my experiences with SEO and with service providers here and everything I have learned so far in IM, and it is what I think is the true reason. Service providers, correct me if I am wrong :)

Before I answer the question I will say what a lot of people are probably thinking when they start reading this - SEO providers do do it themselves already. Of course they do, why wouldnt they? Just because an SEO provider is making money from selling MNS creation services or private network posting services or even selling an ebook it doesnt mean that is the only thing they are doing to make money, they more than likely are building sites for themselves, using their PBNs for their own sites and ranking their own sites using the methods they are selling in guides.

If they are so successful why are they selling these services?

The truth, and something that a lot of people dont appreciate is this: Ranking your own website is extremely hard. Its not easy like a lot of people think. Its not the case that you can buy a micro niche website pre-built for $30 and then flip a switch and have it start earning $x,xxx / month for the rest of your life. If that was the case we would ALL be rich.

I think anyone that thinks the above is true (And surprisingly a lot of people do think it is true from what I have seen) is going to get a shock when they order one of these services.

It is possible, but its very hard

So are MNS sites a waste of money? Is SEO a waste of money? No of course not, it is very possible to build and rank a website to make $x,xxx per month or much much more, as many people here will testify. But it takes an exceptional amount of work.

There are just so many components to a successful website, some of them are as follows:

    • The website itself - has to be well built, easy to use, good calls to action
    • The product - the product or service that you are selling has to be very good
    • The market - there has to be a market for your product or service
    • The competition - The competition has to be beatable, which means finding a good niche
    • On site SEO - this has to be perfect, not over-optimized, not under-optimized
    • Offsite SEO - all of the above is before you have even thought about off site SEO. That is an entire dicipline in itself, its different for every single site you will ever create and its different for every niche that you will work in, its changing all the time and you are always working against (almost) everything that google is working towards
    • Your product has to fit the demand - once you get some traffic you have to hope that you have the right product or service for your visitors. Otherwise they will all bounce off your site
    • Your site has to be well optimized for sales - if its not then your visitors wont convert either
Thats just a few of the things that you need for a successful website and really just a quick overview of some of the obstacles you might face. You could go through that process and find that you mis-calculated something that renders all of your other efforts useless, or you could go right through that process and then find that Google blacklists you and you have to start all over again.

You could try this process 10 times over or 100 times over before you find any success and when you do find success it could be short lived.

    So why bother at all?

Now you know why service providers are selling SEO services - because most if not all of these services are only targeting one small part of what it takes to successfully rank, and profit from, a website. And each of those individual parts are (relatively) easy to master - you can follow a tried and tested system to make them work. And anything that can be tried, tested and repeated can be sold as a service.

But now you might be thinking to yourself - why should I bother at all because its so hard and basically you are saying that its not going to work.

Well the reason you would bother is that when it does work it can be extremely lucrative. Like most of the great things in life, being successful in IM is very hard but if you can get there then its well worth it.

If you manage to rank your site you could well be making $x,xxx / month or even $x,xxx per day and if that happens then you have an amazing income for doing very little (Once its actually making money) AND/OR you suddenly have a very successful and sellable business that you have created from nothing.

    Risk and reward

So when it really comes down to it, its about risk and reward. In IM just like in any other business you have to take risks in order to hopefully gain rewards. And as with any other business it tends to be the case that the bigger the risk you take (Normally in terms of time and money) the bigger the potential reward.

When you think about it like this, its easy to understand why service providers sell their services instead of OR as well as using their services to rank their own sites - if you are trying to rank a site it might take 6 months and X amount of money and in that time you are taking a big risk - it may or may not work. If it works you get a big payout and if it doesnt you have lost all of your investment.

With selling your services to someone else you are getting a smaller income BUT you are offloading all of that risk onto the buyer. In turn that buyer has the potentially massive reward but they are taking on the risk in the process. Having said that, of course there are risks in starting up business as a service provider as well, but hopefully you guys get the point I am trying to make.

I plan to sell my own seo services too but I rank my own sites as well.

Ranking a site takes time while selling a service gives you instant money.

Talking about risk, each side has it own risks, such as whole network deindex ,dealing with bad clients and money site drop dealing with your own sites.

There are plenty of successful people here on BHW doing both.

Take for example @t0mmy ,@Leith and many others.I am sure they rank their own sites as well beside being successful sellers here.

Exactly. Just something that I thought I would point out in my own words. Because I have seen people questioning it quite a few times in the past.

Great information for everyone but I also believe that there is a huge lack of common sense with that people who are not making it in IM, just as in anything else you're gonna have to work really hard
and fail a few times before making it work, it all sums up to the lack of will of most of the guys who don't make it

Good post @davids355 I really dig it and could find some useful informations there.

However, I am providing SEO services to my clients and in the same time I am ranking my own websites as well. :)

Yea I am guessing that most if not all SEO providers are using their own services as well as selling them. That would make sense.
Its just that I have seen people ask that question a lot of times on here so I thought I would add my viewpoint :)

I am not going to recommend any particular service provider because I dont want to take responsibility for your site :)

I will say that there are lots of great service providers in the marketplace. You can take a look over there and you just need to go to the latest page of each of those threads and then work your way backwards to look at the recent reviews then you can judge the quality yourself.

Two things I will say though -

1.Remember that you get what you pay for. If you want the highest quality whitehat and safe (as possible) services then they will come at a premium cost and if you go for the cheapest service then dont expect the same results.

2.Make sure you do your reserach first and you understand SEO and what it takes to rank - if you go in blind and you dont know what you are doing then you can tank your site (As I have done several times in the past). Unless you sign up for a fully managed SEO service package then the seller is not going to take responsibility for your site, you have to do that and you have to know what type of service to use, what type of link velocity you need, what anchors you are going to use and so on to make everything look natural.

I see your point but there are a lot of big name SEO companies that sell services to their clients and use different tactics to rank their site. It's complete crap.

I view this matter from the perspective of running a business. It makes more money for SEO experts to sell service then to rank the site themselves. And selling service carries no risk whereas buyer buys into a hope and take the risk of potential high rewards.

Maybe. But then again, sellers are only supplying demand - there are some buyers out there that only want to pay $5 for their link building and there are sellers that meet that demand although in reality that is a false economy.

It's a bit like in retail computing where the consumer has driven down the price of PCs and laptops but as a result the lower end manufacturers are churning out crap hardware to meet the price that consumers are willing to pay.

Yes maybe sometimes but I don't think necessarily always.

Think about it like this as well - if someone is making $xxxx / month with their own sites. Why not sell SEO services as well? It's a bit like hedging in the stock market and just diversifying your income streams.

Follow the money folks.. ranking sites is lucrative, but not nearly as lucrative as selling clients the tools (links) to rank their own sites.

Let's put it this way - an easy half mill $$ within the FIRST 6 months of our most recent SEO venture (selling to clients).. vs ranking a term that would bring in those numbers in the same time frame.. good luck ;)

For investment, diversification is a good idea but in business this does not work so well. You see the more business that you handle the more customer service and support that you have to provide. Also, operation wise, you need to manage a larger pool of staffs to ensure top performance. HR matters will be another headache. Thus it is better to stay focus than diversify unless your business have grown to such a big scale and there are top management guys to manage each crucial component of the seo business.
