Why overnight has my blog got 369 backlinks from a forum website?

The links are linking to a image I uploaded to my website that I got of pixbay (allowed to use)

I have not used any black hat link building - meaning every link that is on my site I reached out to other website owners,

Why is this happening? Should I be worried?

Check the backlinks for spam using Moz, Ahrefs, Majestic or any other tool you prefer. It will be pretty clear which ones are spam (will show site spam score/ site is in a weird language/ post is spammy when clicking the site linking back to your site).

I went on ahrefs and saw the links there.

When I click on one of the links this is what comes up http://screencast.com/t/8bSPcINWmmy

What do you think? - its not even a proper webpage! The links seem to be all the same.

Someone is hotlinking your image. Because of the high number of links it is probably at their signature.

Should I remove the image or will this actually benefit my website?

Hotlinking to images like that can be a drain on your bandwidth. Every time someone views those forum pages they are sucking up a little bit of your bandwidth without even visiting your website. The more posts that person makes the more links will build to your site and the more bandwidth gets used up.

A lot of webmasters implement no-hotlinking scripts to show a dummy image instead which forces the individual that is using your image to change it to something else or to host the image somewhere else.

Did you find out if and if yes which image it is? Then edit that image and paste the url to your website in it. Make it a modest dimension, let's say 2500x1200 or something, you get it. Free publicity for your website.

Like others have said, you're obviously being hotlinked (DUH).
If you wanna save bandwidth you can easily block hotlinking on your images.

This sounds like a great idea! You could try implementing it and notice the increase in your traffic depending on the forum where the signature is being put.

If you have limited bandwidth then it might be an issue - you need to check how much requests for the image your server is getting, if its draining bandwidth then you can block hotlinking in htaccess OR you could block their server completely.

If you are not worried about bandwidth usage then I would leave as is - the backlinks might not directly help you but if nothing else they will provide some additional generic and safe links to water down your profile if you start building BH links.
